Through the meaning of the nature of the cause for obtaining vast wisdom, and having obtained the eye consciousness and the co-emergent wisdom eye, also, through the meaning of completely and truly showing all knowable things as they are, the consciousness of appearance; and through the meaning of the object of the cause for obtaining the state of liberation and perfect, unsurpassed enlightenment, the consciousness of great fruit and benefit; and through the meaning of the object of the cause for the great, faultless joy of tranquility and insight that perfectly distinguishes liberation and the Dharma of perfect enlightenment not obtained in this life, the consciousness of faultless joy. Therein, when a Bodhisattva listens to the Dharma from a virtuous friend, one should not focus on five aspects of the person teaching the Dharma, but listen attentively, listening to the Dharma with a joyful mind. One should not focus on the broken discipline, thinking, "This person has broken discipline and does not abide in vows, I will not listen to the Dharma from this person," one should not focus one's mind in this way. One should also not focus on low birth, thinking, "This person is of low birth, I will not listen to the Dharma from this person," one should not focus one's mind in this way. One should also not focus on ugliness, thinking, "This person is ugly, I will not listen to the Dharma from this person," one should not focus one's mind in this way. One should also not focus on poor wording, thinking, "This person's wording is not skillful, I will not listen to the Dharma from this person," one should not focus one's mind in this way, one should rely on the meaning, not rely on the words. One should also not focus on unpleasantness, thinking, "That person's words are harsh and angry, and their Dharma teaching is not pleasant, I will not listen to the Dharma from this person," one should not focus one's mind in this way. One should not focus on these five aspects, and a Bodhisattva should uphold the sacred Dharma with reverence, because the Dharma never becomes faulty due to the faults of a person. Therefore, a Bodhisattva of dull intellect, hating the faults of people, does not listen to the Dharma.

It is said that such arrogance only harms oneself and leads to the complete loss of wisdom. Furthermore, it is also stated in the Gandavyuha Sutra: "Noble son, a spiritual friend purifies all obscuring dharmas. A spiritual friend turns one away from evil deeds. A spiritual friend enables one to understand what should not be done. A spiritual friend truly turns one away from the place of heedlessness. A spiritual friend dispels the darkness of ignorance. A spiritual friend cuts the bonds of views. A spiritual friend liberates one from the city of samsara. A spiritual friend causes one to abandon worldly abodes. A spiritual friend liberates one from the snare of Mara. A spiritual friend extracts the thorn of suffering. A spiritual friend liberates one from the darkness of unknowing. A spiritual friend completely turns one away from the sorrow of views. A spiritual friend ferries one across the river of existence. A spiritual friend extracts one from the mire of desire. A spiritual friend turns one away from the unsafe path. A spiritual friend truly shows the path of the bodhisattva. A spiritual friend focuses one on the bodhisattva's vows. A spiritual friend greatly rejoices in diligence. A spiritual friend greatly shows the path to becoming all-knowing. A spiritual friend purifies the eye of wisdom. A spiritual friend causes the mind of enlightenment to increase. A spiritual friend truly generates great compassion. A spiritual friend completely demonstrates conduct. A spiritual friend greatly shows the instructions of the perfections. A spiritual friend establishes one on the ground. A spiritual friend distinguishes patience. A spiritual friend causes all roots of virtue to be completely accomplished. A spiritual friend generates all accumulations. A spiritual friend strengthens all the qualities of a bodhisattva. A spiritual friend causes one to go to the feet of all buddhas. A spiritual friend completely demonstrates all qualities. A spiritual friend causes one to truly receive all meanings. A spiritual friend praises diligence. A spiritual friend shows the door of arising. A spiritual friend completely protects one from straying from the path. A spiritual friend makes the door of the appearance of dharma appear. A spiritual friend makes the door of dharma manifestly moist. A spiritual friend causes the rain of clouds of dharma to be heard to fall. A spiritual friend pacifies all afflictions. A spiritual friend turns one away from all aspects of views. A spiritual friend causes one to abide in all the dharmas of the buddhas. Thus, noble son, a spiritual friend is like a mother in that they generate the lineage of the buddhas. A spiritual friend is the source of benefit."
