Dwelling under a tree has ten virtues: no need to seek shade, no basis for disputes, no dependence on others when walking, humility, endurance of cold, heat, mosquitoes, flies, wind, sun, and venomous creatures, absence of enemies' thorns, non-harm to others, non-harm to oneself, and non-contamination. Dwelling in solitude has ten virtues: because of non-intimacy, sometimes being skilled in subduing wanderers, subduing the senses, great learning, great strength, non-attachment, fearlessness, being like a wild animal, long-lasting residence of the body, delight in solitude, and non-contamination. Begging for alms has ten virtues: being able to gather beings, non-harm to others, contentment, proper distribution, non-greed, knowing measure, extreme joy in virtuous things, accumulating merit, not being gluttonous for food, and not having regrets. The Buddhas of the past were all alms-beggars because they were simple. Abiding in these dharmas, one should not praise oneself, should not slander others, should be diligent in discipline, steadfast in what has been undertaken, and should practice the dharma as it has been heard. Absence of self, absence of pride, non-greed, non-gluttony, abiding in mindfulness, abandoning all afflictions like poison and snakes, non-contamination, one should abandon men, women, boys, girls, monks, nuns, and heretics. One should regard that as a virtue. One should not become a reviler of the eighteen kinds of conduct. One should greatly praise the Great Vehicle and the limbs of practice. The places that a monk should not enter and be intimate with, that is, showing the non-conduct. The conduct of a yogi-śrāvaka, which is also not the conduct of a monk, are five. What are the five? Namely, butchers and prostitutes.

, as well as taverns, royal palaces, and the fifth is the house of the Chandalas, so it is said. In the Vinayaksudraka, it is also said: There are five non-habitual places, namely: prostitutes, widows, old maids, eaters, and sinful nuns. Again, in the same Vinaya, it is said that even if they are very old, one should not prostrate to those who speak of non-Dharma. In the Ratnamegha Sutra, it is also said: Furthermore, wherever there are dog eaters, or castrated female animals, or beings belonging to the birthplaces of animals, creatures with inherently bad behavior, or those who have thoughts of joking with women, men, children, and girls, or all places of slander, all should be completely abandoned. In the Bodhicharyavatara Sutra, it is also said: Great King, a renunciate should not go to a house that possesses nine qualities. What are the nine qualities? That is: flattering upon seeing, making people give up their seats, not believing his words, dwelling without respect for him, when coming out of the house, there are fierce dogs barking behind, there are sinful gatekeepers, the householders also lose faith in him, there are women and those with bad behavior, possessing sinful Dharma, stingy, doing the eighth thing, and there are free people who are employed in the house. Great King, now a renunciate should not go to a house that possesses nine qualities. In the Ratnamegha Sutra, it is also said: How does a Bodhisattva dwell with mindfulness very close in towns, cities, villages, regions, districts, and royal palace retinues? Here, when a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva in towns, cities, villages, regions, districts, and royal palace retinues, wherever there are places that are not in accordance with the rules and should be abandoned, wherever there are places that are not in accordance with the rules of renunciation, all should be completely abandoned. What are these places? For example: taverns, or prostitutes' houses, or royal palaces, or the residences of kings, or gatherings of drunkards, or dancers, or places of song and dance, and so on.

, or any other place, completely abandon those things that are not in accordance with the principle of renunciation, and be very mindful and abide in those places. Thus, Bodhisattvas should be very mindful and abide in villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and around the palaces of kings. So it is said. The Lotus Sutra also says: In the last age, which is extremely frightening, without fear or dread, this sutra should be taught. Whatever a Bodhisattva desires, he should protect a pure place, without disturbance and quiet. Kings and princes, association with them should always be abandoned. Whoever is a close attendant of the king, Chandalas and frauds, heretics and their followers, should not be associated with in any way. Monks who uphold the Vinaya and dwell in the wilderness, regard them as worthy of offerings like Arhats. Do not associate with arrogant people, and abandon those who violate the precepts. Those who are engaged in frivolous talk, nuns should always be abandoned. Laymen who appear to be unstable, should also be abandoned. Laywomen who seek true happiness in this life, association with them should also be abandoned. This is a quiet place. If anyone comes to that place, for the sake of seeking supreme Bodhi, without weakness in this Dharma, the brave one should always speak to them. Women, hermaphrodites, and sentient beings, association with them should all be abandoned. In ordinary homes, brides and young women should all be abandoned. Under the pretext of inquiring about happiness, one should never rejoice in them at any time. Pig sellers, butchers, and slaughterers, association with them should all be abandoned. Those who kill many sentient beings for the sake of enjoyment, and those who sell meat in slaughterhouses, association with them should all be abandoned. Those who support women, singers, wrestlers, and bell-ringers, and others like them, association with them should all be abandoned. Do not serve the chief of prostitutes, and all other means of livelihood for enjoyment, and those who are extremely delighted in them, should all be completely abandoned. When a wise person teaches the Dharma to women, he should not go there alone, and should not sit laughing. When eating
