There are those who are border people but not monastery people, those who are monastery people but not border people, those who are both monastery people and border people, and those who are neither monastery people nor border people. So, what is it that is neither a border person nor a monastery person? Although residing in a monastery, one engages in differentiating thoughts about villages and does not contemplate renunciation. This is called being a border person but not a monastery person. What is it that is a monastery person but not a border person? One also resides in a border area, focusing the mind on solitude, inclining towards solitude, abiding in solitude, prolonging (solitude), and delighting in renunciation. This is called being a monastery person but not a border person. What is it that is both a monastery person and a border person? It is not being mixed with afflictions. This is called being both a monastery person and a border person. What is it that is neither a monastery person nor a border person? It is the opposite of that. Residing in a monastery, and also entering a border village for the sake of the Sangha's affairs, or for the sake of the sick, or for the sake of listening to the Dharma, one should generate the thought: I should go to the monastery without being devoured by demons. And residing there, even when dawn breaks, one's practice will not be disturbed. If one generates the thought: I should not go to the monastery, then as soon as dawn breaks, one's practice will be disturbed. What is it that, when prevented, allows one to properly take up the practice of alms gathering? It is said that in order to prevent the Sangha's gains, one properly takes up the virtue of practice—alms gathering. And alms gathering itself is of three types: small, medium, and large. What is small alms gathering? It is not accepting invited food from any of the five foods. This is called small alms gathering. What is this alms gathering itself? It is not accepting invited food from the five foods, nor accepting invited food obtained through begging, and indicating, "Go to such and such a place, such and such a village." This is called
