Strive! Do not abandon taking alms, and through practice, the chosen deity will become stable. Always be joyful and faithful. Faith in the Buddha's teachings will increase all around. The benefit of increased faith is: a beautiful appearance and undiminished faculties. I abide in true exposition, and I always make diligence the core. By making diligence the core, even gods and nagas will draw images with extremely joyful minds. Thus it is said. Also, from the Sutra of One Arising, it is said: There are five types of alms-gatherers. What are the five? The mad alms-gatherer, the distracted alms-gatherer, the alms-gatherer with great desire, the alms-gatherer with manifest pride, and the true alms-gatherer. These are the five types of alms-gatherers. Furthermore, there are seven types of alms-gatherers: the alms-gatherer who has reached the end, the alms-gatherer who follows the one who has reached the end, the definite alms-gatherer, the indefinite alms-gatherer, the alms-gatherer who acts out of time, the alms-gatherer with an equal head, and the alms-gatherer who is hung by a rope. Thus it is said. Also, in the Vinaya, it is said: From what restriction does the merit of practice truly become that of a solitary dweller? It is said: Because of prohibiting the edge of the village, one truly becomes a solitary dweller. Solitude itself is of three types: great, medium, and small. What is great solitude? Seven subtle particles make a particle. Seven particles make a copper. Seven coppers make a louse. Seven lice make a barleycorn. Seven barleycorns make a finger joint. Twelve finger joints make an elbow. Two elbows make a bow. Four bows make a bow-length. Five bow-lengths make a rope. Twenty ropes make a resting place. Eighty resting places make a shouting distance. Residing in a place eight thousand bow-lengths away is a great solitary dweller. What is a medium solitary dweller? It is said: Residing one thousand bow-lengths away, which is forty thousand cubits. What is a small solitary dweller? Counting five hundred bow-lengths, which becomes two thousand cubits. By what cause does one become a solitary dweller? Is it by the measure of the path or by the form? It is said: One knows the solitary dweller well by the measure of the path, but not by the form.
