It can subdue. And repeatedly, it does not change, thus it is dwelling in accordance with reality. Why are these called the merits of practice? For example, cotton or kapok, when it is not combed, not beaten, not kneaded, it is tangled and not soft, not light. Thus, it cannot be used for spinning thread or for other tasks. Similarly, here, some are attached to alms, their minds clinging to alms and clinging everywhere; some are attached to robes, their minds clinging to robes and clinging everywhere; some are attached to bedding, their minds clinging to bedding and clinging everywhere. These merits of practice, like for the sake of dwelling in pure conduct, make the mind tamed, upright, soft, capable, real, trainable, and suitable. Therefore, they are called the merits of practice. Among them, attachment to alms has two obstacles: attachment to good food and attachment to much food. Therefore, to abandon attachment to good food, one is an alms-gatherer. To abandon attachment to much food, one sits in one seat and does not take food later. Among them, attachment to robes has three obstacles: attachment to many robes, attachment to soft and comfortable robes, and attachment to good robes. Among them, to abandon attachment to many robes, one is a wearer of three robes. To abandon attachment to soft and comfortable robes, one is a wearer of felt robes. To abandon attachment to good robes, one is a wearer of patched robes. Attachment to bedding has four obstacles: attachment to bustle, attachment to dwelling, attachment to the comfort of stretching limbs, attachment to the comfort of sleeping, and attachment to beds, mats, and covers. Among them, to abandon attachment to bustle, one is a dweller in solitude. To abandon attachment to dwelling, one is a dweller under trees, a dweller in the open, and a dweller in cemeteries. Dwelling in cemeteries is also to abandon attachment to sexual intercourse. To abandon the comfort of stretching limbs and the comfort of sleep, one is a constant sitter. To abandon attachment to beds, mats, and covers, one is a dweller in accordance with reality.

Thus, it is said that one possesses the qualities of practice. Also, in the Sutra of Distinctions, it is said: Shariputra, you should have faith, you should understand. Sons of noble families who seek benefit should not enter the assembly dwelling, except for arhats, those without afflictions, or the sick, or the khenpo, or those who follow the acharya. Also, in the Samadhi Sutra of Miraculous Transformation of Perfect Tranquility, it is said: Good Protector, just as a man or woman, or any other kind of sentient being, is burned by fire, and has not yet reached the time of death, while being burned or having been burned, seeks coolness. When seeking, one should not be dispersed by sound except for individual reliance. Good Protector, likewise, a Bodhisattva, weary of the suffering of the world, completely seeks solitude, and by dwelling there, becomes happy. Likewise, one also delights in dwelling in solitude. Thus, without desire, for the sake of seeking Dharma robes, having entered any village or city or region, one should ask a man or woman for what reason they request Dharma robes, for that is without dwelling, that one possesses this first Dharma and keeps the precepts. Good Protector, furthermore, a Bodhisattva engages in alms-seeking, holding three Dharma robes, possessing all the qualities of practice, and truly practicing the twelve qualities of practice. That one possesses these two Dharmas and completely practices the precepts. Thus it is said. Also, in the Sutra Requested by the Powerful One, it is said: Householder, here, a Bodhisattva who has renounced the world should think thus: For whose sake have I renounced the world from home to homelessness? Like fire blazing on one's head and clothes, one should strive diligently to seek wisdom completely. Thus, thus, by completely measuring, one should first abide in the four noble lineages, and should rejoice in the qualities of practice and the reduction of resources. Householder, how does a Bodhisattva who has renounced the world become excellent?
