Said: One should be very fond of medicine, poetry, and stories, very fond of the king, and should not be truly diligent in the affairs of the household. One should be skilled in sitting, rising, walking, and sleeping. So it was said. Showing the consideration of the characteristics of those who break the precepts. It is also said in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*: Light-protector, these four are renunciates. Which four? They are: the renunciate of color, marks, and form; the renunciate who guards rituals and pretends; the renunciate who speaks in metered verses; and the renunciate who truly practices. Light-protector, what is the renunciate of color, marks, and form? Light-protector, here some renunciates have color, marks, and form, wearing monastic robes, with shaved heads, carrying begging bowls, but they engage in bodily actions that are completely impure, speech actions that are completely impure, and mental actions that are completely impure. Untamed, unpacified, unguarded, unprotected, craving for a completely impure livelihood, lazy, immoral, possessing sinful qualities. Light-protector, that is called the renunciate of color, marks, and form. Light-protector, what is the renunciate who guards rituals and pretends? Light-protector, here some renunciates have complete rituals, conduct, and behavior, and engage mindfully in the four conducts, eating and drinking poor food and drink. They are content with the four noble lineages, delight in remote places, and do not associate with householders or renunciates. They speak little and say little, but their conduct is also pretense and hypocrisy, not for the sake of completely purifying the mind, not for the sake of taming, not for the sake of approaching peace, but for the sake of observing objects, clinging to self, abiding in the clinging to self, and also perceiving as a precipice those things that are not aimed at emptiness. They also perceive as enemies those monks who speak of emptiness. Light-protector, that is called the renunciate who guards rituals and pretends. Light-protector, among them, speaking

What is a practitioner who is segmented according to words? Kashyapa, here some practitioners, in order to let others know that they have discipline, observe discipline by examining each other; in order to let others know that they have heard extensively, they hold on to hearing by examining each other; in order to let others know that they live in solitude, they become less desirous and content by examining each other, and become very solitary. Like this, it is for showing others, not for renunciation, not for detachment, not for cessation, not for peace, not for complete enlightenment, not for practice, not for brahmacharya, not for nirvana. Kashyapa, this is what is called a practitioner who is segmented according to words. Kashyapa, what is a practitioner who truly practices? Kashyapa, if someone does not even care about body and life, what to say of gain and respect and segmented words? Having heard the teachings of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, they rejoice and enter accordingly. Even if they practice without desire for nirvana, what to say of being manifestly happy with the three realms? If they do not even want to see emptiness, what to say of seeing self, sentient beings, life, birth-giver, nourisher, person, and individual? Rely on meaning, not on words; seek liberation from afflictions within, not scatter outwards; seeing that all dharmas are completely pure, and that by nature there is no affliction, self is the refuge, not other refuges. They do not even see the Tathagata as dharmata, what to say of the form body? They do not even regard detachment from dharma as the goal, what to say of expressing it through the path of speech? Even if they discriminate against the noble unconditioned Sangha, what to say of discriminating against the assembly of the many? For any dharma, it is not striving for abandonment, not for cultivation, not for realization, not for realization, nor will they be born in samsara, nor will they manifest joy in nirvana.
