Abandoning the middle ground is the work of demons. To separately contemplate the unconditioned, and to be weary of the roots of virtue of the conditioned, is the work of demons. To generate meditative absorption and to completely seek a livelihood through meditative absorption is the work of demons. To teach the Dharma, but not to induce compassion in those who listen to the Dharma, is the work of demons. To seek faults in discipline and qualities, and to be angry with those who are immoral, is the work of demons. To tell stories of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and to conceal the stories of the Mahāyāna, is the work of demons. To conceal profound truths, and to tell various stories, is the work of demons. To take vows on the path of a Bodhisattva, but not to seek the path of the Pāramitās, is the work of demons. To praise diligence, but not to induce non-diligent sentient beings to engage in diligence, is the work of demons. To accumulate roots of virtue, but to turn one's back on Bodhisattvas, is the work of demons. To abide in the yoga of Vipaśyanā, but not to allow sentient beings to correctly grasp Vipaśyanā, is the work of demons. Not to seek complete exhaustion, and not to apply antidotes to the streams of afflictions of Saṃsāra, is the work of demons. To discriminate in wisdom, but not to hold the object of great compassion, is the work of demons. All virtuous actions that do not possess a qualified preceptor are the work of demons. Not to pursue the Bodhisattva's Piṭaka, and to hold secret words of abandonment, is the work of demons. To conceal the Dharma of extensive learning, hoping that others will know, is the work of demons. To be distracted by worldly affairs, and not to pursue the meaning of extensive learning, is the work of demons. Not to rely on, not to befriend, not to respect Bodhisattva Dharma speakers who abide correctly in the Mahāyāna, but to rejoice together with those who abide correctly in the Śrāvakayāna and Pratyekabuddhayāna who are unequal, is the work of demons. At any time, the enjoyment of Indra or Brahmā or the world protectors or kings or measurers or householders, or wealth and jewels, and the greatness of power

become. At that time, they do not rely on those who possess the greatness of the Dharma, do not associate with them, and do not show them respect. These twenty sons of gods are the remaining deeds of the demons of the Bodhisattvas, so it is said. Regarding the meaning of trade: In the "Sutra of Refuting Differences," it is also said, "There is no refutation of differences for those who delight in gambling." In the "Sutra of Protecting the Country," it is also said, "Towards the holy lamas and parents, they are constantly disrespectful, they are ungrateful, cunning, constantly unrestrained, dissolute, and ignorant, constantly attached to gain and profit, they love to pretend and deceive. Some, no matter how they pretend to observe vows and asceticism, say, 'Here, I am unparalleled.' They harbor hatred towards each other, constantly diligent in seeking opportunities. They love the work of fields and gambling, they are far from the teachings of loving virtuous deeds. In later times, these unrestrained, monks whose merits of discipline are extremely distant, dig up faults, fight, and with the power of jealousy, cause my teachings to decline, constantly far from the path of Bodhi, far from the treasures of the noble ones, abandoning the excellent noble path, they wander like animals." So it is said. In the "Sutra of Entering Great Compassion," it is also said, "The non-diligent yogi, this is his characteristic, constantly attached to the wives of others, proud of his physical form, becoming reckless, wandering in towns, villages, and countries, they are constantly diligent in eating and drinking, singing, dancing, music, and trade, they are also greedy for drinking, losing shame, in short, for discipline and conduct, the non-diligent yogi carries letters, destroys the rules together with householders, those with improper conduct dwell in the wrong path, constantly creating deeds that the Buddha condemns, constantly diligent in the deception of measuring, creating afflictive and sinful deeds, falling into the lower realms due to the decline of deeds." So it is said. In the "Sutra of Pure Conduct," it is also said, "One should not look at worldly speech, one should turn away from the language of trade."
