Just as the fields of Lu are cleared, saying, "I allow them to be expelled from the region," such sutras and vinaya should be known as spoken by the Buddha. Whatever sentient beings take the sutras and vinaya spoken by demons as their measure should be known as associating with demons. Whatever takes the sutras and vinaya spoken by the Buddha as their measure should be known as bodhisattvas, thus it is said. In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness on the Sacred Dharma, it is also said: For example, the retinue of the demon called Contention and the second demon called Distraction cause the minds of sentient beings who practice the Dharma to be distracted. When listening to the sacred Dharma, they become drowsy. The third is called Making Desire Excessively Deluded, which is that when alms are given, in the minds of the almsgivers, the patrons, if I give to ascetics, Brahmins, and Jains, what will my sons and daughters eat and wear? They cause attachment to arise. These three types of demon retinues, who protect the world, delude sentient beings and wander in the world. The fourth is the demon retinue called Various Kinds of Perceptions, who protect the world and act in the world. They change the minds of those who have gone forth, causing them to first arise with attachment and union, entering cities, engaging in the trade of goods, looking at women, entering taverns, fighting, arguing, dividing the sangha, and causing dreams that harm the mind. The demon retinue, these four who protect the world, become effective when there are people in Jambudvipa who speak of what is not Dharma, thus it is said. In the Sutra on the Pride of Demons, it is also said: These twenty are the most prominent of the works of demons for bodhisattvas. What are these twenty? For example, merely because they desire liberation, they attend to, rely on, and honor those who practice yoga out of fear of samsara; this is the work of demons. Discerning emptiness separately and causing sentient beings to be lost...
