I rejoice in the offerings given with faith to those. They will be well used, thus it was said. Also in the Sutra Requested by Brahma: After asking thus, the Blessed One spoke to King Brahma-given: Great King, these four are the precipices for renunciates who have entered this teaching. What are the four? Namely, not respecting the Buddha, abandoning the sacred Dharma, hating those who teach the Dharma, and taking offerings given with faith without diligence. Thus it was said. Also in the Sutra Requested by Upali: Shariputra, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a householder living at home should abide in two kinds of giving. What are the two? Namely, giving of Dharma and giving of material things. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a householder living at home should abide in these two kinds of giving without attachment and without anger. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who belongs to the renunciates should abide in four great kinds of giving. What are the four? Namely, giving of pens, giving of ink, giving of books, and giving of Dharma. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who belongs to the renunciates should abide in these four kinds of giving. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has obtained forbearance in the Dharma of non-arising should abide in three kinds of giving. What are the three? Namely, giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Among them, giving is completely giving away the kingdom. Great giving is completely giving away wives and daughters. Extreme giving is completely giving away head, hands, feet, eyes, skin, bones, and marrow. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who has obtained forbearance in the Dharma of non-arising should abide in these three kinds of complete giving, thus it was said. Also in the Ratnarashi Sutra: Why is that? Shariputra, Bodhisattvas who belong to the renunciates practice Dharma giving.

Therefore, they will abide. Householder Bodhisattvas, because they have no miserliness towards those who completely give away all possessions, they will abide. Shariputra, therefore, with the giving of Dharma, one is able to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, but not so with the giving of material things. Regarding the intention of being miserly towards one's household, it is also said in the Sutra of the Bodhisattva Pitaka: Shariputra, if an ordained Bodhisattva possesses five qualities, he will not please the Buddhas, nor will he rely on a virtuous friend, nor will he obtain perfect leisure, and the roots of virtue that he has accumulated will also be wasted. The Bodhisattva, the great being who abides in vows, will also not follow, and will not quickly manifest and fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. What are the five? Namely, practicing immoral conduct, slandering the sacred Dharma, being attached to gain and respect, being attached to verses, having a strong sense of self, and generating jealousy and miserliness towards others' households. Shariputra, if an ordained Bodhisattva, a great being, possesses these five qualities, he will not please the Buddhas, nor will he rely on a virtuous friend, and so on, up to not quickly manifesting and fully awakening to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Shariputra, it is like this: a hungry dog picks up a bone without meat, stained with blood, and stays at the entrance of the alley, gnawing on the bone covered with saliva. Then, a Kshatriya like a great Sala tree, a Brahmin like a great Sala tree, and a householder like a great Sala tree, come towards the hungry dog. When the dog sees them coming from afar, it thinks: These people are going to snatch this delicious food from me. So it glares very fiercely, bares its teeth, and barks loudly. Shariputra, what do you think? Does that person want that bone without meat, stained with blood? Answer: Bhagavan, no.

It is not so, it is not the Sugata. The Blessed One said: Why is that dog barking so much, staring with its eyes, baring its teeth, and barking loudly? He reported: It thinks like this: Someone is going to snatch this delicious food of mine, so it barks very much, stares with its eyes, bares its teeth, and barks loudly. He said: Shariputra, similarly, those monks who are diligent in household miserliness and attached to being surrounded by feces and urine will appear. Those who, having obtained such a leisurely and perfect nature, waste their time, I say they are like dogs. Therefore, the Tathagata is not only a place for proclaiming such a nature, but also, Shariputra, those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who seek the wisdom of the Buddha for the benefit of many beings and for the happiness of many beings, even if they give up their own flesh, what need is there to say that they will not be jealous and stingy for spying on and approaching other people's homes? Again, Shariputra, those foolish beings who strive for a living, are slaves to wealth, and are devoted to worldly possessions, and are devoted to food and clothing, will become jealous and stingy towards other people's homes for the sake of spying and approaching. Shariputra, if you see a monk and think, I used to be close to him here before, where did this person come from later? This person used to be my disciple, where did this person come from later? It is not appropriate to generate jealousy and stinginess like this. If those patrons promise to offer that person a bowl, Dharma robes, alms, bedding, medicine for the sick, and supplies, thinking: This is for the one who was promised before, it is for the one who came later, not for me, then they generate three faults in that person. What are the three? Thinking that one should leave this place, thereby creating faults in the dwelling; knowing what should not be known and not knowing what should be known; and whatever unstable teachings are proclaimed as faults in front of the householders.
