Those who are going to become like that should be given alms, and they should take refuge in the Three Jewels and truly place the training in speech. Discipline, learning, and meditation—if one does not strive diligently in these three places, then giving with faith will be wasted. Having received alms with faith from Brahmins and faithful householders, but then giving it to others for the sake of a small amount of wealth, then giving with faith will be wasted. Eating when not hungry, then giving with faith will be wasted. Eating without knowing the measure, then giving with faith will be wasted. If one eats even one more mouthful than what is sufficient, then giving with faith will be wasted. Therefore, you should not waste it, it is said. In the *Yogācārabhūmi*, it is also said: Who are the true beggars of a Bodhisattva? They are those who are suffering, without protectors, miserly, and without refuge. Giving to them is the field of merit for a Bodhisattva, it is said. In the *Ratnamegha Sūtra*, it is also said: Regarding begging for alms, one portion should be given to those who practice like Brahmā. The second portion is for those beings who have become suffering. The third portion is for those beings who have fallen into wrong paths. The fourth portion is for oneself to eat, it is said. In the *Akṣayamati-nirdeśa Sūtra*, it is also said: Regarding a monk dwelling in a solitary place, one portion should be given to the poor of all cities. The second portion should be given to those beings belonging to the animal realm who dwell in solitary places, it is said. In the *Satyākāra Sūtra*, it is also said: Shariputra, how should a Bodhisattva who has gone forth from the household life and is striving for the limbs of enlightenment give alms? What should he give as alms? How much of the nature of giving should he give? Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who has gone forth from the household life and is striving for the limbs of enlightenment should truly restrain himself with the vows of individual liberation. He should make contentment and his sphere of activity complete. He should regard even the smallest fault as fearful, and all the actions of body, speech, and mind

Who are pure, whose lives are completely pure, and having taken them correctly, one should train in the trainings. One should regard the teachings as the teacher, regard recitation as the teacher, regard discipline as the teacher, and regard dwelling in the monastery as the teacher. Whatever Dharma is heard and however it is understood, one should extensively teach it to others. One should become a giver of Dharma, and one should become a patron of Dharma. Shariputra, whichever householder Bodhisattva fills Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious jewels and offers them to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, and whichever renunciate Bodhisattva teaches a single four-line verse, this one generates even more merit than that. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not give material offerings to renunciates. Why is that? Shariputra, because those who have become renunciates, with reverence, for immeasurable and incalculable eons, do not offer robes and alms to householders or renunciates, but only respect the nature of Dharma, regard the teacher and the image as examples, and abide by relying on them closely. Why is that? Shariputra, my Shravakas give the gift of Dharma, but they do not give the gift of material things. Shariputra, whatever is obtained that falls into the alms bowl and is contained in the alms bowl, that which is endowed with Dharma and obtained through Dharma, he should eat it together in common with those who practice similarly to Brahma. Thus it was said. Also, in the "Essence of the Sun Sutra," the Blessed One said to the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya: Kaundinya, look at those beings who deceive themselves. Those beings who are frightened by the fear of poverty, in order to benefit the monks who abide in the Dharma, from whatever various objects of their possessions they offer, some they use themselves, some they give to others for the sake of enjoyment, some they forcibly seize and enjoy, and thus they experience suffering in the three lower realms. Again, those beings who are frightened by the fear of poverty, in the prison of samsara.
