They do not desire the Dharma of emptiness and peace. They cause monks, nuns, and laypeople to grasp with sinful minds, making them ignorant. Constantly under their control, they abandon enlightenment in future times. Thus it is said. The Maitreya Lion's Roar Sutra also states: Maitreya, a Bodhisattva should stay five hundred yojanas away from these four things. What are the four? Gain, respect, praise, sinful friends, and places of commotion. If one dwells in a place where another person of the Bodhisattva vehicle also dwells, and if, being with them, joy, happiness, and supreme joy arise, and one possesses non-attainment and non-contention, then one should dwell there. But if one generates even a single thought of aversion or hatred towards them, one should stay five hundred yojanas away from them. Thus it is said. The Sutra of the Subduing of Pride also states: For noble families, contentment and suitability, knowing enough is good. Not knowing enough and having great desire is not good. A person of broken morality enjoying offerings given with faith is not good. All gains, respect, and praise of those who possess morality are good. To live by gains of praise in the presence of Bodhisattvas is not good. The gains of Dharma that abide in truth and possess qualities are good. Thus it is said. The Shariputra Dharani Sutra also states: Attached to gain, there is no mindfulness, no wisdom. There is also no faith, discipline, Dharma, or thought. That is as far from enlightenment as the sky is from the earth. Therefore, one should completely abandon gain. Thus it is said. The Ratnakuta Sutra also states: Kashyapa, these two are attachments to the sky of renunciation. What are the two? Seeking worldly gossip and particularly holding a begging bowl and Dharma robes. These are the two. To that, one should say this: Diligent in practicing worldly gossip, and particularly holding a begging bowl and Dharma robes, these two are attachments to the sky, which Bodhisattvas should abandon.

O Sustainer, these two are the strong bonds of renunciation. What are the two? Namely, the bond of becoming views, and the bond of gain, respect, and praise. What are these two? To this it should be said: The bond of views and gain and respect, and the bond of fame, at the time of renunciation, are called strong bonds, as the noble ones say. Those who have renounced should always abandon these. O Sustainer, these two are the Dharma that obstructs renunciation. What are the two? Namely, relying on the side of householders, and thinking of harming the side of the noble ones. These are the two. To this it should be said: Intending to rely on the side of householders, and disparaging the side of the noble ones, these two are the obstacles and hindrances to renunciation. Bodhisattvas should truly abandon these. O Sustainer, these two are the stains of renunciation. What are the two? Namely, not being weary of afflictions, and holding onto the houses of friends and the houses that give food. These are the two. To this it should be said: Those who have renounced are not weary of afflictions, and rely on the houses of friends and the houses that give food, these two are said to be stains by the Lord of the Conquerors. Bodhisattvas should abandon these in this way. Thus it is said. In the Moon Essence Sutra it is also said: Just as the light of a water tree, and reeds are destroyed by fruit, just as a mule is destroyed by many births, so gain and respect destroy evil people. Just as hail falls and destroys all crops, so gain and respect destroy the path to enlightenment. Just as flowers are burned by fire, so gain and respect destroy the path to enlightenment. Any monk who obtains gain, and obtains great respect, should know that he is harmed by Mara, and the wise should depart from there. Just as gain and respect, having obtained them, destroy the path, there is no such sin as destroying the path to liberation. Thus it is said. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka Sutra it is also said: Shariputra, furthermore, in ten other ways, Bodhisattvas should know that their precepts are completely pure. What are these ten, and what is purity? In suitable things

Contentment itself is the discipline of having few desires. Completely abandoning desires is the discipline of truly rejoicing. Completely isolating body and mind is the discipline of practice. Reproaching busyness is the discipline of dwelling in solitude. Independently accomplishing virtuous roots is the discipline of diminishing the means for accumulating qualities. Observing the faces of others is the discipline of delighting in the noble lineage. Not deceiving gods and humans is the discipline of acting according to one's words. Examining one's own mind is the discipline of individually discerning one's own faults. Protecting the minds of others is the discipline of not finding fault with the faults of others. Not abandoning the objects of gathering is the discipline of fully ripening all sentient beings. Shariputra, one should understand that with these ten aspects, the discipline of a Bodhisattva is completely pure. Thus it was said. Also in the Sutra of the Chapter on Dharma Speakers: Shariputra, furthermore, apart from the attention of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, through the means of teaching the Dharma that is perfectly in accordance with omniscience, I am unable to rebuke the Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Great Vehicle are attached to gain and respect, and rely on gain and respect. Lest they say, 'The Tathagata has rebuked us.' Those individuals will turn away from the aspiration for omniscience. Therefore, sons of good family or daughters of good family, I must protect them. Thinking, 'How will they quickly realize the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment?' Without hesitation, one must rebuke them and teach the Dharma. Shariputra, in the meantime, one should see that the Tathagatas are definitely dwelling here, and inhale and exhale deeply, thinking, 'What should I do?' Thus it was said. Also in the Jewel Heap Sutra: Ananda, do you see these monks who are emanations of Mara? Ananda said to the Bhagavan, thus:
