Should be observed. Gains and respect should be observed as being like lightning, wheels, and falling tongues. Gains and respect should be observed as being defiled by many defilements. Gains and respect should be observed as being like the home of a friend and the home that gives to beggars. Gains and respect should be observed as causing complete confusion of the mind. Gains and respect should be observed as causing sorrow because they cause painful things to change. Gains and respect should be observed as causing the basis of mindfulness to be forgotten. Gains and respect should be observed as causing white dharma to weaken. Gains and respect should be observed as causing the four correct abandonments to completely decline. Gains and respect should be observed as obstructing the faith of others. Gains and respect should be observed as causing magical powers and direct knowledge to decline. Gains and respect should be observed as being respected before, but not respected later. Gains and respect should be observed as causing unfriendliness to exist. Gains and respect should be observed as abandoning friends. Gains and respect should be observed as being like a prostitute in order to seduce others. Gains and respect should be observed as completely abandoning meditation and immeasurable qualities. Gains and respect should be observed as causing sentient beings to fall into hell, the realm of animals, and the world of Yama. Gains and respect should be observed as being in accordance with the conduct of Devadatta and the pleasure-seekers. Maitreya Bodhisattva should observe what faults there are in gains and respect, just like these. Having observed, one should also reduce desires and not be completely afflicted. Why is that? Because Maitreya Bodhisattva has no such faults as these in reducing desires. Therefore, he has no obstacles to the Buddha's teachings. Householders and renunciates will not be disgusted. In order to completely purify gods and humans, those who abide should follow and protect. All those who fall into evil destinies will have no fear. Sin

Because of being free from attachment, one is not overcome. Because of being completely liberated from the realm of demons, one is not robbed. One is not shaken by all sufferings. One is desired by gods and humans. It is clear that one abides in the practice of meditation. Having abandoned deceit and trickery, and seeing faults in the five objects of desire, one is mindful. Abiding in the lineage of the noble ones, one acts according to what is said. The wise and those who practice pure conduct desire this. If one knows such benefits of loving-kindness, the wise Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having completely abandoned gain and respect, for the sake of abandoning all gain and respect, should abide in contentment with a superior intention, and should always rely on contentment, so it is said. Also, in the Sutra of Upholding the Land, it is said: "Those who are untamed, wild, and arrogant, disrespectful, full of pride, and deeply attached, those who are overcome by afflictions, inferior, and full of afflictions, for such beings, supreme enlightenment is very distant. If overcome by attachment, laziness increases. If overcome by laziness, faith diminishes. If faith diminishes, discipline is greatly diminished. If discipline is corrupted, good rebirths decline. Having become impoverished, one goes forth completely, and having obtained offerings, one becomes liberated from poverty. Those who abandon the burden of gold are like taking up a burden of grass. Seeking gain, one goes to a solitary place. Having gone there, one seeks clothes and relatives. Having abandoned clairvoyance, intelligence, and perfect confidence, one then clings to relatives again. Being deluded, one is controlled by pride and falls into the place of bad rebirths. One clings to beings in unfavorable circumstances, the poor, those born into low castes, the blind, the ugly, and those with little power. Those beings completely lose their conduct and behavior. Having carelessly obtained gain, their memory is greatly diminished. They will fall into a great and unbearable precipice. From then on, there will be no liberation for countless eons. If enlightenment can be attained here, then even Devadatta could attain enlightenment. Just as a bird falls when scattered by the wind, so too, attachment causes one to fall in this way. Merit declines, and one becomes attached to another's wife. Discipline becomes impure, and one falls away from all virtuous deeds. One does not attain the wisdom of the mind of enlightenment. Those beings, regarding the teachings
