When seeing a patron, one does not adorn one's behavior. How does one not adorn one's behavior? By observing the amount of the yoke, observing sorrow, and observing without obscuration, one slowly and gently places one's steps, without lifting them. In this way, one does not make a show with the body. How does one not make a show with speech? A Bodhisattva does not speak less in order to gain profit, does not speak softly, does not speak joyfully, does not utter words of flattery. In this way, one does not make a show with speech. How does one not make a show with the mind? When a Bodhisattva gives alms or when a patron offers gain, one shows a small desire in words, but does not generate desire in the mind. Son of good family, for example, saying that one's desire is small, but desiring gain in the mind, this is inner suffering. In this way, one does not make a show with the mind. Thus, Bodhisattvas are those who are free from making a show and from flattering for gain. How is a Bodhisattva free from gain through hints? When a Bodhisattva gives alms or sees a patron, one does not hint, saying, "I am lacking in Dharma robes, I am lacking in an alms bowl, I am impoverished due to illness." One does not ask or speak to the giver of alms or the patron. In this way, a Bodhisattva is free from gain through hints. How is a Bodhisattva free from gain through solicitation? When a Bodhisattva gives alms and sees a patron, one does not say, "A certain great patron has given me a certain great object, and I have also done a certain great benefit for him. He also knows that I am endowed with morality and have heard much, and that I have few desires, so he gave me this and that. I also placed a compassionate mind close to him, and accepted it." One does not utter such words. In this way, a Bodhisattva is free from gain through solicitation. How is a Bodhisattva free from gain sought improperly? Son of good family,

Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not seek gain because of wounds on the body and wounds on the mind. The wounds on the body are as follows: running around for the sake of gain, running around everywhere, and engaging in immoral conduct. The wounds on the mind are as follows: desiring gain, being more harmful towards the gain of others compared to those who practice pure conduct. Thus, a Bodhisattva is separated from gain sought in an improper manner. How does a Bodhisattva separate from gain that is not in accordance with the Dharma? Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not use false scales, does not use false measures, does not harm trust, and does not conceal the gain he has obtained. Thus, a Bodhisattva is separated from gain that is not in accordance with the Dharma. How does a Bodhisattva separate from gain that is completely impure? Here, a Bodhisattva does not take or claim as his own anything mixed with the property of stupas, mixed with the property of the Dharma, mixed with the property of the Sangha, not given, or not permitted. He does not generate a mind of attachment. Thus, a Bodhisattva is separated from impure gain. How is it that a Bodhisattva has no attachment to gain? Son of good family, even if a Bodhisattva obtains gain, he does not claim it as his own, does not regard it as wealth, does not accumulate it, but from time to time gives to renunciants, Brahmins, parents, friends, ministers, relatives, and impoverished relatives, and from time to time he also uses it himself. When he uses it, he uses it without attachment and without clinging. Even if he does not obtain gain, he does not generate a mind of sadness, and he does not become completely discouraged. He does not regard giving and givers as untrustworthy. These are gains that are in accordance with the Dharma, not belonging to the Sangha, praised by the Tathagatas, not despised by Bodhisattvas, praised by the gods, not mocked by those who practice pure conduct, and are content with little. Son of good family, if one possesses these ten qualities, then a Bodhisattva is one whose livelihood is completely pure, so it is said. This is what Brahma asked.
