In this Mahayana, one should not take the five precepts of a layperson's training. To protect the sacred Dharma, one should carry weapons and protect the monks. Question: What kind of monks are those who walk and travel with such laypeople carrying weapons? Are they worthy of being teachers, or not? Are they called breakers of vows, or not? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, after the Tathagata passes into complete nirvana, there will be internal strife and the invasion of lands. In that evil time, most will ordain due to the calamity of famine, becoming shaven-headed ones. They will expel monks who possess discipline, as well as those who are endowed with rituals, virtues, and conduct, and even kill them. At that time, how should monks who possess discipline travel in villages, cities, and secluded settlements? In such times, I allow monks who possess discipline and have become teachers to travel on the road and protect their lives by going with those who carry weapons. Laypeople, patrons, kings, and ministers, to protect monks who possess discipline, I say that holding weapons is also discipline, but do not kill. To hold weapons in order to ward off (harm), that is the most skillful discipline. A teacher is one who expounds the teachings of the Great Vehicle, possesses correct views, abandons unsuitable umbrellas, oil bottles, and various fruits, does not rely on kings and ministers, does not flatter patrons for the sake of gain, is not skilled in speech, possesses perfect conduct, renounces false ascetic practices, possesses discipline, possesses virtuous qualities, possesses wisdom like a king, does not crave appearance, adornment, gain, and respect, is content, and shows worn-out belongings, that is called a teacher.

Those Saṅghas of one's own retinue who desire offerings and respect should be stopped. There are three kinds of Saṅgha: the Saṅgha mixed with those of immoral conduct, the childish Saṅgha, and the Saṅgha of intrinsic nature. The Saṅgha mixed with those of immoral conduct should be stopped. The so-called Saṅgha mixed with those of immoral conduct is one that only associates with those of immoral conduct, does not punish them, and acts in accordance with them for the sake of material gain. Even if one is virtuous, one will be counted among those of immoral conduct by living with them. This is called being mixed with those of immoral conduct, and is called a teacher because it prevents their improper conduct. The childish Saṅgha refers to the weak and ignorant among the monastic residents and alms-gatherers. During confession and Uposatha, they only purify their own small circle, but do not purify those of immoral conduct, and live mixed with them. This is called the childish Saṅgha. It is called a teacher because it eliminates the improper conduct of those ignorant ones. The Saṅgha of intrinsic nature cannot be destroyed even by a hundred million demons. That is the Bodhisattva Saṅgha, which is intrinsically pure. Those who can stop the two kinds of Saṅgha with immoral conduct are called teachers. Again, in the same Sūtra, it is said: Similarly, although I have now fully revealed the great Nirvāṇa and the great secret in their entirety, those beings who have not become vessels will not hear it. Again, it was said: Those who have no accumulation, who do not discriminate food, like birds in the sky, are difficult to trace. What is the meaning of this teaching? Those who have no accumulation, who do not discriminate food, who are difficult to trace, who went where? It is difficult to trace. Here, it refers to accumulating jewels and so on. The word "Yongs" is a suffix, a specific word.
