Yes, they are those who do not accept. They are those who act without attachment. They are those who turn their backs on the world. They are those who are free from craving for the world. They are those who are not defiled by the faults of the world. They are those who revere the precepts established by the Tathagata and diligently strive to learn them. They are those who are content with coarse clothing, alms, bedding, medicine for illness, and coarse utensils. They are those who are free from the begging bowl, Dharma robes, and utensils, etc. They are those who constantly hold a fearful mind and are weary of worldly things. They are those who delight in solitude and constantly strive in meditation. Son of good family, if one possesses these ten qualities, then the Bodhisattva is one who has renounced the household life, thus it is said. Moreover, in the Great Nirvana Sutra, it is said: Son of good family, just as, for example, if a poisonous tree or tribulus grows in a field or house, it must be uprooted from its roots, similarly, for those who break the precepts and slander the true Dharma, I allow them to be punished like slaves. Those who do not punish them are far from my teachings. Those who punish them are my disciples and my Shravakas. Great Light and one of the same lineage requested: If the Tathagata speaks in this way, then it is not appropriate to regard all sentient beings as if grasping at something with sound. If even the names of sandalwood and candana are to disappear, then how is it appropriate to punish those who slander the true Dharma? The Tathagata has allowed such a race of people to do so. The Blessed One said: Great Light and one of the same lineage, for example, whether it be a householder, merchant, captain, minister, or even a king, who loves and cherishes his own son, and entrusts those who are extremely beautiful and possess excellent features to a teacher, saying to that teacher: I entrust these sons of mine to you so that they may learn discipline, rituals, conduct, and knowledge. You should discipline them and teach them rituals, conduct, and knowledge. Teach, teach. If my

Of these four children, three will die from beating, threatening, and punishment, and one will live. If one becomes skilled, even if three die, it is worthwhile. Three die, and one becomes skilled, what is there to learn from that? Is this considered the teacher committing evil deeds? World Honored One, it is not, for him, even a small matter will not become an evil deed. Why is that? Because he does not have selfish thoughts, and doing so will increase much merit. The World Honored One said: Son of good family, similarly, the Thus Come One views those beings who slander the true Dharma as if they are possessed by Rahu, just like handing children over to a teacher, he hands them over to kings, ministers, and lay practitioners. Then, if the kings, ministers, and lay practitioners punish those indulgent children, is this considered the Thus Come One committing evil deeds? World Honored One, it is not, the kings, ministers, and lay practitioners will not commit evil deeds either. The Thus Come One has no defilement, how could there be defilement? In order to protect their own merits and conduct, they will punish even if they are unwilling. The World Honored One said: Thus, one should cultivate the thought of a single child, those who cultivate in this way will cultivate the thought of a single child. Therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should cultivate the thought of a single child towards all sentient beings. After doing so, they will cultivate the Samadhi meditation on all sentient beings. Then, they will become extremely harmless and pure, therefore, Bodhisattvas will become long-lived, extremely long-lived, and will be able to remember their past lives. Great Light Protector and those of the same lineage asked: If one cultivates the thought of a single child towards all sentient beings, will Bodhisattva Mahasattvas become long-lived? The World Honored One said: Indeed, it is so. Great Light Protector and those of the same lineage asked: World Honored One, if we give an example, a storyteller in an audience of spectators...

Within, many talks were made about the lineage called Mala Pudu, and having arrived at his own home, Mala was extremely happy, just like being harmed by sticks, many pigs, donkeys, and stones. The Blessed One himself said: If one cultivates the perception of regarding all sentient beings as one's only child, then Bodhisattvas, great beings, will be long-lived, exceedingly long-lived, able to remember past lives, immortal, constant, and steadfast. Since this is the case, why did the Blessed One himself manifest a short life? Or does the Blessed One regard all sentient beings as being seized by Rahu? Alas, Blessed One! The Blessed One has indeed endured hardships! Striving like a human, one cannot even live to be a hundred years old, and since the Thus-Gone One is so short-lived, did the Blessed One, when he was previously practicing as a Bodhisattva, cut off a single, pitiful life? Apart from being short-lived like this, did the Thus-Gone One do something extremely displeasing? The Blessed One said: Of the same lineage as Mahāprabhāpāla, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, do not weep like this, do not weep like this! The Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha is exceedingly long-lived! The Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha is exceedingly steadfast! Exceedingly peaceful! Exceedingly constant! Exceedingly eternal! One of the same lineage as Mahāprabhāpāla requested: Blessed One, how is it that the Thus-Gone One is exceedingly long-lived? The Blessed One said: One of the same lineage as Mahāprabhāpāla, just as the great rivers such as the Ganges, Yamuna, Sarayu, and Hingkula, and other small rivers all flow into the great ocean, so too, one of the same lineage as Mahāprabhāpāla, all the rivers of life in the heavenly realms and on earth flow into the ocean of the Thus-Gone One's life; therefore, the Thus-Gone One is exceedingly long-lived. And again, in that same sutra, like a vajra.
