If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes to quickly perfect the six paramitas, wishes to abide in great compassion, wishes to perfect the ten bhumis, wishes to quickly manifest unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment, wishes to turn the wheel of Dharma, wishes to liberate all sentient beings from the ocean of existence, wishes to subdue the four maras, and wishes to gather countless retinues in the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates, then that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should gradually engage in yoga with the four Brahma-viharas. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is a beginner in practice pervade sentient beings with loving-kindness from the eastern direction up to the direction above? He thinks to himself, 'May all sentient beings be happy.' He truly knows, 'May all sentient beings be happy.' He diligently cultivates, 'May all sentient beings be happy.' He blesses, 'May all sentient beings be happy.' Whether it is father or mother, or as far as a Pratyekabuddha or a Tathagata, he thinks of them with a mind of happiness, and even blesses them, 'May all sentient beings be happy.' When any sentient being has done something unpleasant to this person in the past, and this person feels hatred and distrust towards them, cannot truly abide, and does not abandon anger, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is a beginner in practice should train diligently in this way: 'Although this sentient being has done something unpleasant in the past, if I were to feel resentful and displeased towards them, then I would be doing something unpleasant to myself.' All the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, abiding in all ten directions, look upon me with the eye of a Buddha, and will rebuke me in this way: 'Look at this sentient being who hates sentient beings, yet desires to seek the unexcelled wisdom that is not shared by the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas. It is like a cripple who is missing both legs wanting to go from here to Uttarakuru, or someone with poor eyesight wanting to write letters, or someone with a disabled hand wanting to fight in battle.'

Or, like wanting to burn the king of mountains, Mount Sumeru, without fire, or like wanting to wash sentient beings without water, similarly, a foolish person also wants to seek unsurpassed wisdom with the power of anger. Whoever does not abandon anger towards all sentient beings, even the Hearer Vehicle cannot be accomplished, let alone the Great Vehicle? Therefore, all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will reproach me. Bodhisattvas, great beings, as well as solitary Buddhas, as well as great Hearers, as well as sages with divine eyes, and even the gods will reproach me. I will engage in evil conduct. I will be inclined towards Avici hell, and I will not touch the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Therefore, I will create great harm for myself in this life and the next. Therefore, for this, a novice Bodhisattva Mahasattva should diligently abandon harmful thoughts. Thinking in their heart, "May all sentient beings be happy," and so on, up to the point of blessing. When any sentient being has previously done something non-virtuous, and there is an opportunity to do something non-virtuous, they become disgusted, disbelieving, not abiding in the right path, and not abandoning anger. Even so, for this, a novice Bodhisattva, a great being, should diligently train in this way, and so on, as previously stated, diligently abandoning the mind of harm, and so on, up to the point of blessing, "May all sentient beings be happy." When any sentient being has previously done something non-virtuous, and is doing something non-virtuous, and there is an opportunity to want to do something non-virtuous, and so on, up to the point of having previously done something non-virtuous to my pleasing and agreeable friend, and so on, up to the point of doing something non-virtuous, and so on, up to the point of wanting to do something non-virtuous, and so on, up to the point of having done something beneficial for my displeasing and disagreeable enemy, and so on, up to the point of doing something beneficial, and the meaning of this.

Up to "wishing to do," one thinks, "May all beings be happy." Fully knowing "May be happy," fully practicing "May be happy," blessing "May be happy." Up to "father or mother," blessing the Shravakas or Tathagatas to be at ease and happy, up to "will not be attached to it," fully realizing the impossible, for any sentient being, with a mind of extreme hatred and disbelief, one cannot truly abide, and there is a time when anger is not abandoned. Thus, a newly engaged Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train in this way: from "this sentient being has done non-benefit to me" to "my unfriendly and unpleasant one," up to "wishing to do benefit to this," if I, without cause, generate a mind of annoyance towards them, abiding with a mind of extreme hatred, then I will create great non-benefit for myself. I request all the Buddhas, Bhagavat, abiding in all ten directions, to look upon me with the eye of the Buddha, until I cannot touch the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Thus, I will bring great non-benefit to myself in this life and the next. Thus, the newly engaged Bodhisattva Mahasattva should abandon the mind of annoyance. Thus, the newly engaged Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with a mind of loving-kindness, without hatred, without competition, without harm, becoming a great renouncer, through well-cultivating the immeasurable, having faith in one direction, abiding after completion, up to "below and above filled with loving-kindness," through well-cultivation, having faith, abiding after completion, up to "not because of attachment." Son of the lineage, this is the loving-kindness of the newly engaged Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with sentient beings as the object, which is not common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas." Thus it was said.
