That giving is impure. Great sage, if giving is done in order to reciprocate a benefit, that is also impure. Because that is the cause of inferiority and desire. If with such a mind one gives to fire, or gives to flames, or gives to water, or gives to a king in order to be fully known, that is also impure. If out of fear one gives to executioners and so forth, giving five uncommon things, that is impure. Giving poison, giving weapons, killing animals and giving meat, giving alcohol to the unrestrained, thinking that these will become mine, will become my service and offering, giving gatherings in order to gather and obtain beings, giving for the sake of speech, sound, and verses, giving to musicians for the sake of dance, song, laughter, jokes, talk, and entertainment, such giving is also impure. Giving to astrologers for auspicious signs, giving another's wealth to a friend, letting wild animals and birds eat another's house or field's grain piles, barley and wheat piles, and thereby generating joy and satisfaction, such giving is also impure. Giving for the sake of showing off, giving to a doctor out of fear of bodily discomfort, scolding beggars, making them angry before giving, that is also impure. If one doubts when giving, "Does this have a result or not?", that is also impure. If after giving, one torments oneself with suffering and regret, that is also impure. If after giving, one thinks, "All that is taken from me will be given back to me in the next life," generating such a mind, that is also impure. If one thinks, "May I alone enjoy the result of this merit, may it not go to any other sentient being," thinking thus

If it arises, that is also completely impure. If one does not give alms when one is young, nor in the middle period, when afflicted by illness, and at the time of death, the pain of being struck, when sorrow and the grief of death turn into, delight in becoming a Buddha, when the root of lack of faith causes one to do so, giving alms to the objects of charity, that is also completely impure. If one lives in another place, in a place and dwelling called so-and-so, thinking that one will become a famous almsgiver, giving alms for the sake of fame, that is also completely impure. If one sees that worldly people are unhappy with those who are unwilling to give food, thinking that the world can tolerate the faults of those who are willing to give alms, and gives alms, that is also completely impure. If one cherishes a woman in one's heart, as a cause for taking her as a wife, and for the sake of dispelling, from the basis of the woman, to friends, relatives, and related parties, using jewels, gold and silver, diamonds and lapis lazuli, as well as silk, coral, and Dugula cloth, etc., to please them, that is also completely impure. If one thinks, "I have a lot of wealth, but I have no son. I will give alms to anyone who is suitable," and gives alms with this thought, that is also completely impure. If one gives alms with the thought that one can gain the next world by giving alms in this life, that is also completely impure. If one uses and discards the possessions of the poor, miserly, extremely impoverished, those with tattered and stained clothes, because one desires flowers, fruits, and wealth, and gives alms to those who have obtained great wealth, that is also impure almsgiving. Great sages, these thirty-two situations are considered to be almsgiving that is not completely pure. The ripening of those great sages is like planting bad seeds in a salty field, and sprouts growing. Although the ripening of that almsgiving is not non-existent, the faults of the field and the seeds will not turn into flowers and fruits. Great sages, like this, for example,

For example, if someone takes a seed they like and plants it in an uncultivated field, and that seed falls on the ground, is watered by rain from all directions, sprouts and grows, and is not devoured by ghosts or spirits, it will still not blossom or bear fruit. Similarly, great practitioners, if their classifications of generosity are also full of afflictions in thought and action, then the ripened fruit will not be abundant. From the Sutra of Pure Conduct of Bodhisattvas: Good son, what is the pure conduct of the Bodhisattva's perfection of generosity? For example: Abandoning the mind that is completely attached to stinginess, increasing the mind that follows generosity, eliminating the defilement of stinginess, and blessing it well with the mind of generosity, his mind will abide in completely giving away all possessions. When he gives, he will not make four distinctions. What are the four? That is: not regarding sentient beings as different, not regarding Dharma as different, not regarding dedication as different, and not regarding intention as different. Then, how does a Bodhisattva not regard sentient beings as different when giving? Good son, for example: this person should be given to, that person should not be given to; this person should be given much to, that person should be given little to; this person should be given precious things to, that person should be given non-precious things to; this person should be given to regularly, that person should not be given to regularly; this person should be given to respectfully, that person should not be given to respectfully; this person should be given everything to, that person should not be given everything to; this person is moral, that person is immoral; this person is a place of merit, that person is not a place of merit; giving to this person will make merit completely pure, giving to that person will not be pure; this person has correctly entered the Buddhist path, that person is on a wrong path. Like this, abandoning the behavior of having a discriminating mind, treating everything equally, neither looking up to nor looking down upon,
