Also, in the Vinayavastu it is said: "Knowing that all dharmas are without self-nature, like hair, Even giving away one's own flesh without a timid mind, At that time, what need is there to mention giving away external things? If one practices miserliness, then there is no place for it. Attachment arises from self-grasping and grasping onto things as 'mine', How could fools have the mind of generosity? The miserly will be born in the realm of pretas, Even if reborn as a human, they will become poor. At that time, Bodhisattvas, knowing the poverty of sentient beings, Delight in giving and always give generously. The well-adorned four continents are like ashes of spittle, Joy arises after giving, but not from obtaining the continents. Bodhisattvas, with the clear light of wisdom, To as many sentient beings as there are in the three realms, Thinking, 'May I give to them,' they give and give, And dedicate it to supreme enlightenment for the benefit of beings. Having given, they do not abide in things, Nor do they expect any fruition. Thus, those skilled in giving give everything, Giving away small things, they gain immeasurable results. As many sentient beings as there are, without exception, in the three realms, Having taken them all into consideration, all those beings, To the World Knower, Buddhas, Arhats, and Pratyekabuddhas, Giving and giving for endless eons, seeking the good qualities of Shravakas, Whatever skillful means the wise Bodhisattvas possess, Rejoicing in those virtuous deeds, For the benefit of sentient beings, they dedicate to the supreme enlightenment, By the power of dedication, they overcome all beings. Even if there is a great pile of wish-fulfilling jewels, One lapis lazuli jewel overcomes them all. Likewise, Bodhisattvas, rejoicing in the vast accumulation of giving of all beings, Overcome all beings. If Bodhisattvas give to beings, Not claiming it as their own, nor being stingy with things, Then the power of that root of virtue will increase greatly, Like the full moon in a cloudless, bright sky. The giving of Bodhisattvas cuts off the suffering of pretas, And also cuts off poverty and all afflictions. When practicing, they will obtain endless increase of enjoyment, With giving, they fully ripen all sentient beings who have become miserable." Thus it is said.
