Gathering all nine types of giving together brings happiness to beings in this life and the next. Among them, distinguishing between material and fearlessness giving brings happiness in this life. Distinguishing with Dharma giving brings happiness in the next life. What is the pure giving of a Bodhisattva? This can be understood in ten ways: without obstruction, without attachment, without accumulation, without arrogance, without dependence, without shrinking back, not evil, not turning away, not looking for reward, and not looking for fruition. What is giving without obstruction? When a Bodhisattva encounters a beggar who comes well, they give quickly without feeling weary. How does a Bodhisattva act quickly, starting from giving? Just as the beggar rejoices from receiving the giving, the Bodhisattva also rejoices from giving. What is giving without attachment? The Bodhisattva does not think that this giving has no result, or that harmful giving will turn into virtue, or that merely perfect giving will lead to worldly and trans-worldly purity. What is giving without accumulation? The Bodhisattva does not accumulate and gather things to be given for a long time and then give them all at once later. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva does not turn away a beggar who comes well, even though they have things to give. If there is no reason to turn them away, why would they consider accumulating? The Bodhisattva does not see that more merit will be accumulated from accumulated giving. If the objects of giving are the same, and the beggars come earlier or later, or come at the same time, then whether giving gradually or all at once, why would one assume that there would be a difference in merit? Furthermore, the Bodhisattva considers accumulated giving to be with faults, because...

Giving according to one's means of enjoyment is seen as faultless. Why is that? Because giving that is accumulated in this way, if requested by beggars, would turn away a hundred previous beggars, and before being oppressed by the suffering arising from the universal distress, intolerance, and distrust of those beggars, one would give accumulated gifts to some. Therefore, a Bodhisattva does not give by accumulating. What is giving without arrogance? A Bodhisattva does not give with a contemptuous mind towards beggars, nor does he give for the sake of competing with others. After giving, he does not become arrogant with that giving, thinking, "I am generous and a master of giving, but others are not like that." What is giving without dependence? A Bodhisattva does not give relying on fame, sound, and verses, because fame is considered to arise from the letters of discrimination, related only to sound, and like a dry leaf. What is giving without timidity? Here, a Bodhisattva is joyful before giving, his mind is in harmony at the time of giving, and he has no regrets after giving. After hearing about the vast and supremely extensive giving of the Bodhisattvas, he does not despise himself and become timid. What is giving that is not bad? A Bodhisattva carefully chooses from the things to be given, and gives the best and most excellent of food, drink, vehicles, clothing, and so on. What is giving without turning away? A Bodhisattva, with an equal mind, does not discriminate between friends, enemies, and ordinary people, and gives with equal compassion. What is giving without looking for a return? When a Bodhisattva gives with a compassionate heart and a loving heart, he does not expect the other to return the favor, because beings are burned by the fire of desire for happiness and are powerless.
