, if one does not look to the benefits of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then the bodhisattva should quickly recognize with wisdom the faults arising from looking to the wrong results. And one should separately examine all conditioned things as they truly are, that all conditioned things are of the nature of destruction in an instant. Fruits and enjoyments are of the nature of destruction because they are completely exhausted and separated from the nature of destruction. Thinking thus, when one separately examines in this way, one abandons looking to the results, and whatever one gives, one gives only by dedicating it all to the great enlightenment. This should be understood as the four obstacles to the bodhisattva's giving, and the knowledge of the four antidotes to giving: namely, understanding, accepting suffering, completely understanding what is inverted, and seeing conditioned things as having no essence. Among these, the first three types of antidote knowledge cause the bodhisattva to definitely give excellent giving. The last type of antidote knowledge causes one to fully receive the fruit of true merit. This should also be understood as the giving of a bodhisattva with wisdom. Furthermore, the bodhisattva goes to a solitary place, gathers himself inwardly, and with pure thoughts and heartfelt joy, aspires to various kinds of vast and immeasurable things to be given, and wishes to bestow giving on sentient beings. Thus, the bodhisattva will increase immeasurable merit with small accumulations. This should also be understood as the giving of a bodhisattva with wisdom, this is the giving of a bodhisattva with wisdom, a wise person with great wisdom. Thus, in brief, belonging to the giving of material things, things to be given, whether one possesses them or not, and likewise, relying on the giving of dharma, relying on individual true knowledge, relying on the giving of superior pure intention, relying on the knowledge of the antidotes to giving, and superior intention

Relying on the giving of faith and understanding, it should be known that it is the unique characteristic of Bodhisattvas. It should be known that the extensive differentiation of giving all internal and external things of Bodhisattvas is like this. From this point onward, all other difficult givings and so on, it should be known that all are differentiations of this very giving. Then, what is the difficult giving of Bodhisattvas? If a Bodhisattva possesses a small object to be given, he harms himself, endures suffering, and gives it to others, this is the first difficult giving of Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva, for unpleasant things, whether naturally loved, or familiar for a long time, or greatly beneficial, or for the most excellent and supreme objects to be given, eliminates attachment, and gives them to others, this is the second difficult giving of Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva gives to others the things to be given that have been accumulated by great Dharma gatherings, this is the third difficult giving of Bodhisattvas. Then, what is the giving through all doors of Bodhisattvas? A Bodhisattva himself or begs from others, the objects to be given, or his own garden harvest, parents, children, wives, servants, maids, employees, those who live on leftovers, friends, advisors, relatives and elders, or others who desire, giving to them, these four ways in brief, are called the giving through all doors of Bodhisattvas. Then, what is the giving of noble persons by noble Bodhisattvas? A Bodhisattva gives with faith, respect, his own hands, at the right time, and without harming others, this is called the giving of noble persons by noble Bodhisattvas. Then, what is the giving of all aspects of Bodhisattvas? Giving without dependence, giving without stinginess, giving with joy.

Giving without interruption, giving to vessels, giving to non-vessels, giving everything, giving to all, giving at all times, giving without fault, giving all sentient beings' things, giving the things of the place, giving the things of wealth and grain, these thirteen kinds of giving are called the giving of all aspects of a Bodhisattva. Then, what is the Bodhisattva's giving to the poor and desirous? Here, the Bodhisattva gives food and drink to those who are poor and desirous of food and drink; gives vehicles to those who desire vehicles; gives clothes to those who desire clothes; gives ornaments to those who desire ornaments; gives various kinds of utensils to those who desire various kinds of utensils; gives incense, flowers, garlands, and ointments to those who desire incense, flowers, garlands, and ointments; gives dwellings to those who desire dwellings; and gives light to those who are poor and desirous of light. These eight ways should be understood as the Bodhisattva's giving to the poor and desirous. Then, what is the Bodhisattva's giving that leads to happiness in this life and the next? The giving of material things, the giving of Dharma, and the giving of fearlessness, in short, should be understood as the giving that leads to happiness for sentient beings in this life and the next. The giving of material things is done by eliminating the defilement of stinginess and the defilement of hoarding, and giving what is good, clean, and suitable. Eliminating the defilement of stinginess is for the sake of completely abandoning the mind's attachment. Eliminating the defilement of hoarding should be understood as completely abandoning attachment to enjoyment. The giving of fearlessness is to completely protect from the fears of lions, tigers, crocodiles, kings, thieves, and water, etc. The giving of Dharma is to teach the Dharma without distortion, to teach logically, and to cause them to correctly accept the basis of learning, this is the Bodhisattva's giving.
