One should examine in this way: Am I giving this Dharma gift to destroy afflictions? Or to perfect the accumulation of wisdom? Or to make sentient beings happy? If I do not see afflictions, and if I do not give, I will see more accumulations of wisdom in this life and the next. If I give, it will not become great enlightenment, and in the next life, I will gain great Dharma benefits, not small ones. If I do not give, I will cultivate wisdom for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, so this sentient being and all other sentient beings will be happy. If I have already given, then only this one sentient being will be happy. Having understood this truthfully, if the Bodhisattva does not give, it will not become a fault, nor will he regret it, nor will he violate the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Why will he not violate it? The Bodhisattva will not reject the beggar with harsh words, saying, "I will not give you." Instead, he will skillfully hint for him to leave. The skillful means is this: From the beginning, the Bodhisattva offers and dedicates all resources and the Dharma to be given to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions with a pure mind. For example, just as a monk dedicates his Dharma robe to his Khenpo or Acharya. Because he has dedicated in this way, even if he has accumulated all resources and various vast things to be given, he is called a Bodhisattva who abides in the noble lineage. Immeasurable merit will also increase. His merit will also visibly increase, being constantly and repeatedly remembered, and always complete. He will also hold the things to be given as if they were filled with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If he sees a beggar and thinks that he should give him whatever Dharma he desires, then he will know that there is nothing that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have not given up for sentient beings, and thus fulfill the beggar's wishes.

make it completely perfect. If it is deemed inappropriate, then relying on that very thought, one should gently explain to him, 'These fine things belong to another, and there is no permission to give them to you.' Or, one should give the other person two or three times as much, and send them away with respect and honor. In any case, one should make it known that this Bodhisattva has not become attached and unwilling to give to us, but rather, he certainly does not have the authority to give this Dharma of the scriptures, and therefore does not give. One should understand this. This also, originating from the Dharma giving of a Bodhisattva, should be recognized as the giving of wisdom. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva, regarding all giving of Dharma and material things, whether it be categories, definitions, exact meanings, causes, results, and detailed distinctions, gives after thoroughly knowing them as they truly are. This also should be recognized as the giving of a wise Bodhisattva. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva gives with thoughts of loving-kindness to those beings who cause harm; with thoughts of compassion to those who suffer; with thoughts of joy to those who have qualities; with friendship to those who are helpful; and with thoughts of equanimity to those who are dear. This also should be recognized as the giving of a wise Bodhisattva. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva thoroughly knows as they truly are the obstacles to giving and the antidotes to those obstacles. Among them, there are four obstacles to giving: not being accustomed to it in the past; having few things to give and not possessing them; being attached to the best and most pleasing things; and looking forward to and being delighted in the abundant fruits of enjoyment in the future. Because if a Bodhisattva has things to give, but when a beggar comes, he does not engage his mind in giving, then he will quickly recognize with wisdom that this fault is because he is not accustomed to it. Like this, oneself

Because one has not given alms before, that is certain. Therefore, although I have these enjoyments and the beggar has come well, my mind does not incline to giving. If one does not give after examining separately in this way, one will realize that in the future I will also hate giving. Therefore, after recognizing this, one should also rely on the antidote to the obstacles to giving, and examine separately. One should not follow the faults caused by not being accustomed to giving, nor be dominated by them. Furthermore, if the beggar comes well, but because the enjoyment is small, the Bodhisattva's mind does not incline to giving, then he should quickly recognize with wisdom that this is caused by the obstacle to giving - poverty. Accepting the suffering caused by poverty, after examining separately, he gives alms with compassion. He thinks like this: In samsara, without benefiting others, due to the faults of previous karma, or being dominated by others, I will suffer many unbearable sufferings such as hunger and thirst. If the suffering of this life is caused by the cause of benefiting others - giving, even if I die because of it, only giving will be good for me. Turning away the beggar is not like that, even if there is no giving, some people can survive on some grass or leaves. In this way, the Bodhisattva accepts the suffering caused by poverty and gives alms. Furthermore, when the beggar comes well, if the Bodhisattva's mind does not incline to giving because the object to be given is very pleasing and excellent, the Bodhisattva should quickly recognize with wisdom the faults caused by attachment. I regard suffering as happiness, this inverted self-perception is the cause of suffering in the future. After fully recognizing the inversion in this way, abandon it, examine separately, and give that object. Furthermore, that Bodhisattva, after giving alms, if he sees that the result of giving is the benefit of great enjoyment.
