Even if the mind is already happy and longing, one should not give to those who are unfriendly, to yakshas, to rakshasas, and to the forgetful. One should not give sons, wives, or sons of good families who live in happiness as human slaves. Bodhisattvas should not give kingdoms to beggars who mostly engage in harming others and to the forgetful. If one has the power to expel, one should expel such a person from the kingdom. Bodhisattvas should also not steal their parents' wealth to give to beggars. Sons, wives, servants, maids, employees, and those who live on wages should be treated like parents. One should not give away any possessions to beggars by harming parents, employees, or those who live on wages to increase wealth. Bodhisattvas should give alms after acquiring wealth in accordance with the Dharma, but not through non-Dharma means, untimely means, or by harming and intimidating others. Bodhisattvas who abide in the teachings of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, should not give alms by violating their vows in any way. When giving alms, Bodhisattvas should treat friends, enemies, ordinary people, those with virtues, those with faults, the inferior, the equal, the superior, the happy, and the suffering with a mind close to being beneficial, and give alms with an equal mind towards all sentient beings. Bodhisattvas should not give less than what they have said or vowed to beggars, but only give equal or more. If a Bodhisattva vows to give good things, they should not give bad or inferior things. Even if they have vowed to give bad or inferior things, if they have good things, they should only give good things. Bodhisattvas should not give alms with an unhappy, angry, or disturbed mind.

Nor will they do so. Even after giving alms, they repeatedly say, 'I have benefited you with this and that alms,' or 'I have nurtured you,' or 'I have guided you,' nor will they say such things. Even when a Bodhisattva gives alms to an evil person, they do not give with contempt or disrespect, let alone to someone with virtues. A Bodhisattva, even when faced with beggars engaged in various wrongdoings, who are rude, untamed, scolding, angry, and slanderous, does not become weary of their wrongdoings and refrain from giving. A Bodhisattva understands that they are mostly of a nature defiled by afflictions, and gives alms with only a mind of loving-kindness. Nor do they give while holding onto wrong views, for example, they do not believe that offering with great harm, or that giving with violence, will transform into Dharma, nor do they give by associating it with auspiciousness and good fortune. Nor do they believe that merely the extreme purity of all kinds of giving will purify the detachment of worldly and transworldly beings, but rather they believe that giving is merely a collection of purity. Nor do they give looking at the result, but rather they dedicate all giving to unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment. The Bodhisattva, seeing and deeply believing in the ripening of all kinds of fruits of all kinds of giving, does not rely on others, nor is led by others to give. For example: 'Giving food makes one strong, giving clothes makes one beautiful, giving vehicles makes one happy and stable, giving lamps makes one have eyes,' and so forth, should be understood extensively. The Bodhisattva also does not give alms out of fear of becoming poor, but gives only with the thought of compassion. The Bodhisattva also does not give alms that are incompatible with the beggars.

Then, for example, to those who are diligent in discipline, leftover food and drink, or children, and urine and tears, and mucus and vomit, and pus and blood, or that which is contaminated with blood, or stale food, rice and barley that have not been mixed or blended should be discarded, or for those who do not eat garlic and onions, food contaminated with garlic and onions, or for those who do not eat meat or drink alcohol, food mixed with or contaminated with alcohol, and likewise, not allowing them to engage in discordant work, nor giving alms to other Bodhisattvas, not giving alms that are incompatible with this and do not bring about bad consequences. Bodhisattvas should not make beggars beg repeatedly, make them beg and then leave, torment them in a way that seeks profit, nor give alms, but should give alms only when they have just begged. Bodhisattvas should not rely on fame and sound, and verses, to give alms. One should not rely on the return from others, and Indra himself, Mara himself, the Chakravartin himself, and Ishvara to give alms. One should not think that it is not bad to respect, honor, serve, and make offerings because one fears that the other is a king, a great minister, a person of the town, a person of the region, a Brahmin, a householder, a rich person, a merchant, a captain who is able to give alms, and knows that they are almsgivers, and give alms in order to pretend in front of others. One should also not give alms in a miserly way, even if it is a small amount, if most of it is given, let alone a large amount. Thinking, "Through this almsgiving, let that fool believe, and then deceive him afterwards," giving alms in order to find the weaknesses of others. For example, by giving alms to seize a village, a part of a village, a region, or a part of a region, thinking that it should be seized from the owners and given, in order to distinguish oneself from others, one does not give alms to others. Bodhisattvas are wise and not lazy.
