It is superior to do so. It is not to abandon the mind of enlightenment and to have the mind endowed with the vehicle of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Daughter, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abandons the mind of enlightenment, abandons upholding the sacred Dharma, abandons making offerings and service to the Thus-Gone One, abandons maturing all sentient beings, and like this, generates the mind in the ground of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and if that Bodhisattva turns away from the desire for the mind of enlightenment and reproaches it, then both of them will go to the evil realms, sentient beings, and hell. Daughter, it is superior for a Bodhisattva to have done the five deeds with a slaughterhouse, but not because of being separated from the mind of enlightenment and practicing the fruit of entering the stream. Daughter, it is superior for a Bodhisattva to abide in sentient being hell for a kalpa or a hundred kalpas or a thousand kalpas or a hundred thousand kalpas by completely holding the mind of enlightenment, but not because of being separated from the mind of enlightenment and practicing the fruit of once returning. Daughter, it is superior for a Bodhisattva to fall into the birthplaces of animals, but not because of being separated from the mind of enlightenment and practicing the fruit of non-returning. Daughter, it is superior for a Bodhisattva to abide in sentient being hell after committing killing, but not to completely pass into Nirvana after manifesting Arhat as a thief is terrified. Daughter, it is superior for a Bodhisattva with the intention of completely holding all sentient beings to dwell in a pit of fire, but not to abide in the realm of Nirvana of Hearers because of being separated from the mind of enlightenment. Daughter, the Bodhisattva who generates the mind to completely hold all sentient beings will be worshiped by the world including gods, humans, and asuras. It will be worthy of being worshiped by all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, so it was said. In the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it is also said: Subhuti, if a wicked demon or a person blessed by a demon comes in the form of a Buddha, and says to a Bodhisattva Mahasattva the ground of Hearers or Solitary Buddhas

If signs appear, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will think: "This must be possessed by a demon, or an evil spirit, or someone blessed by a demon, who comes in the guise of a Buddha. The Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, do not cause Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas to grasp the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground." Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva reads and recites a very extensive Sutra, and an evil demon comes in the guise of a Buddha and says: "These are not spoken by the Buddha, nor by the Hearers. These Sutras that you practice are spoken by demons," then, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should know that whoever causes me to turn away from Unsurpassed Perfect Awakening is certainly possessed by a demon, or an evil spirit, or someone blessed by a demon. Thus spoke the Blessed One. Regarding the intention of not forgetting the mind of enlightenment: From the Samadhi Sutra of the Collection of All Merits, it is also requested in this way, and the Blessed One spoke thus to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Son of Non-Attachment: "Son of Non-Attachment! A Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: excessive pride, disrespect for the Dharma, contempt for virtuous friends, and speaking false words. Son of Non-Attachment! A Bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will forget the mind of enlightenment. Son of Non-Attachment! Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will also forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are: associating with Yogic practitioners of the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicles, delighting in inferior vehicles, hating and slandering Bodhisattvas, and despising teachers and texts of all Dharmas. Son of Non-Attachment! A Bodhi-

Then, the mind of enlightenment will be forgotten. Maitreya's son, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, the mind of enlightenment will be forgotten. What are the four? Namely: one who transforms, one who flatters sentient beings, one who speaks with a double tongue to virtuous friends, and one who is particularly attached to gain and respect. Maitreya's son, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, the mind of enlightenment will be forgotten. Maitreya's son, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, the mind of enlightenment will be forgotten. What are the four? Namely: one who belongs to the path of demons, one who is obscured by the obscurations of karma, one whose superior intention is weak, and one who lacks wisdom and means. Maitreya's son, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, the mind of enlightenment will be forgotten. Thus it is said. It is also said in the sutra of Brahma's empowerment: These sixteen great kings are to be recognized as the characteristics of a jealous person. What are the sixteen? Cunning like a fox, speaking falsehoods, not well subdued, holding as true what is not praised by others, not believing in the qualities of others, thinking too much, being too sorrowful, being too displeased, being ungentle, having deteriorated color and shape, being overcome by pride, not liking monks, having a contemptuous attitude towards those who come suddenly, seeking faults that can be argued, being stingy with dwelling places, listening to the Dharma with a tilted ear and not listening, having a distracted mind and sending words elsewhere, not liking the words of the Dharma, and saying: 'What is this that he is saying? I do not understand.' They also say: 'This is a foolish person, teaching the Dharma with worldly terms.' They do not respect the Dharma and discipline understood by the noble ones, and these foolish people do not understand. I say, 'After attaining enlightenment, I will respectfully abide in the Dharma under the Bodhi tree.' When teaching the Dharma to the monks, they also stand or sit outside the door to listen to the Dharma.
