Ah! Those who desire merit, the offerings made in hundreds of millions of kalpas of samsara in the past, are not as good as a person who possesses an intelligent and virtuous nature, who has faith in the teachings of the Sugata, and who, after generating a stable Bodhicitta, offers flowers to the stupa of the Sugata. This is said to be more meritorious than the former. Offering flowers of Bodhicitta, the former merit is incomparable, like the ocean and a drop of water. In this Buddha-field, all sentient beings become enlightened in each kalpa. Even if one does nothing else for many kalpas, there is no end to the merit that can be spoken of. This shows the ripening fruit of Bodhicitta. Even if one speaks of it for countless kalpas, it cannot be fully expressed, like the dust rising from the earth. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of the Perfect Cloud of Enlightenment, it is also said: With great gain, it should be proclaimed, whatever gain and the two-footed Superior one, perfectly endowed, listen, O Brahmin. I desire to become the sovereign lord of the four continents, a Chakravartin king. That sentient being with this desire should direct his mind towards Bodhi. Those who desire to ascend to the sovereign lord of the Thirty-three, that sentient being with this desire should direct his mind towards Bodhi. Whoever desires the unsurpassed state of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, that sentient being with this desire should direct his mind towards Bodhi. Those who desire to guide sentient beings, those who desire to accomplish the benefit and happiness of others, that sentient being with this desire should direct their minds towards Bodhi. Those who desire to be liberated from all diseases, those who desire to become the king of physicians, that sentient being with this desire should direct their minds towards Bodhi. Those who desire to destroy darkness, those who desire to create light, that sentient being with this desire should direct their minds towards Bodhi. Those who desire to destroy the perversions from which the three realms arise, that sentient being with this desire should direct their minds towards Bodhi. Those who desire to abandon all afflictions, those who desire to subdue the demons, that sentient being with this desire should direct their minds towards Bodhi. Those who desire to pacify ignorance,

May those who desire to cut the net of existence, direct their minds towards enlightenment. Abandoning desire and craving, and without arrogance, may those who desire, direct their minds towards enlightenment. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in that same sutra, it is said: If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in this discipline, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to follow faith, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to follow the Dharma, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in the Dharma of stream-entry, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in the Dharma of once-returning, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in the Dharma of non-returning, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in the Dharma of Arhatship, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. If in this Buddha-field, one diligently teaches all sentient beings to abide well in solitary enlightenment, the accumulation of merit thus generated would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. With the cause of merit, like the supreme sandalwood, in the Buddha-field, constructing temples, constructing stupas the size of Mount Sumeru, would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. To ripen sentient beings who seek merit, wherever one builds many like the surroundings of the Victorious One's stupa, would not equal one-sixteenth of the mind of enlightenment. Here, all sentient beings
