Due to the pride of patience, one becomes negligent, and due to the pride of patience, one will experience the suffering arising from the root of negligence. When he initiates diligence, (thinking) these monks dwell in laziness, do not strive, and enjoy offerings given by faith, these people are not even worthy of a bowl of water. When he initiates diligence, he praises himself and disparages others, I would say that is a child. When he enters into meditative absorption, the meditative absorption will generate desire, and he thinks like this: We dwell in meditative concentration. These other monks dwell in distraction. They delight in commotion. How could they become Buddhas? These people are far from the enlightenment of the Buddha. When he directs his mind to perception, as many thoughts associated with arrogance as he generates, he will wander in samsara for that many eons. There, they must practice for the sake of enlightenment. If he is someone who has heard much, he will examine all unwritten dharmas with the aspect of untruth, focus on wisdom, and be attached to arrogance, I would say that is not a foolish person. I would say he is destroyed by ignorance. I would say he is not a noble person. I would say he is destroyed by conceptualization. If he is someone who abides in the Great Vehicle, he will think like this: I am the elder in the world. I am the lord in the world. I will become the most supreme in the world. If he sees individuals of the Hearer Vehicle, he will generate a mind of distrust towards them. He will slander, he will insult, he will speak unpleasant words. He said, with an evil mind and evil speech, he will obtain going to the lower realms. In the Cloud Jewel Sutra, it also says: How does a Bodhisattva become free from inappropriate attention? Here, the Bodhisattva goes alone to a solitary place, dwells in extreme solitude, (thinking) I have entered the Dharma and Discipline of the Tathagata, while others, whether they are renunciants or Brahmins, all live in a mixed manner.

Many monks, do not generate such thoughts, thinking that one should abandon the Vinaya Pitaka in the teachings of the Tathagata. If so, the Bodhisattva would be separated from improper attention. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of the Mudra of Entering into Generating the Power of Faith, it is also said: I abide in not praising myself and not disparaging others, and I should also cause others to abide in not praising themselves and not disparaging others, so that one may obtain the exhaling breath. Therein, self-praise is the very act of falsely attributing qualities to oneself. Disparaging others is the very act of destroying the true qualities of others. Thus it is said. Explaining the intention of stating the merits of Bodhicitta. In the Sutra of the Lamp of Wisdom, it is also said: How does a Bodhisattva become restrained by the precepts of a Bodhisattva? Here, the Bodhisattva thinks that he cannot attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment merely by relying on the Pratimoksha precepts. So what should he do? The Bodhisattva should diligently study the conduct of the Bodhisattva and the detailed classifications of the Bodhisattva's precepts in those Sutras spoken by the Tathagata, so that he may practice accordingly. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of the Collection of the Correct Dharma, it is also said: World Honored One, what is the superior discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva? The Bodhisattva is indeed restrained by the Pratimoksha precepts, but he is not satisfied with merely the Pratimoksha, but relies on the Bodhisattva's precepts. He is also complete with rituals and conduct, but he does not think that he is pure with merely rituals and conduct, but relies on the Bodhisattva's rituals and conduct. He fears even the slightest faults and relies on the Bodhisattva's wisdom. So, what is the Bodhisattva's wisdom? The Bodhisattvas, because they know the suchness of all dharmas, are not afraid of karma and afflictions, this is the Bodhisattva's wisdom. Thus it is said. The Avatamsaka Sutra.

O, furthermore, son of good family, the mind of enlightenment is like the seed of all the Buddha's teachings. It is like a field because it causes the white Dharma of all beings to grow. It is like the earth because it fully reveals all the worlds. It is like water because it purifies all the stains of afflictions. It is like wind because it has no dependence on all the worlds. It is like fire because it completely burns the grass of clinging to views. It is like the sun because it illuminates the places of all sentient beings. It is like the moon because it fully expands the mandala of white Dharma. It is like a lamp because it makes the light of Dharma. It is like the eye because it fully sees equality and inequality. It is like a path because it goes to the city of all-knowing wisdom. It is like a heretic because it completely abandons evil heretics. It is like a vehicle because all Bodhisattvas manifestly abide. It is like a door because it causes entry into the door of all Bodhisattva's conduct. It is like an immeasurable palace because it abides in the house of samadhi. It is like the best of edible trees because it experiences the joy and faith of Dharma. And so forth, it is like a stupa to the worlds with gods, humans, and asuras. Thus it is said. Son of good family, for example, there is a medicine called "fearless." If one holds it, five fears will not arise, that is, one will not be burned by fire, one will not be harmed by poison, one will not be cut by weapons, one will not be carried away by water, and one will not die from smoke. Son of good family, similarly, the Bodhisattva who expounds the medicine of the mind of all-knowingness will also not be burned by the fire of desire, will not be harmed by the poison of objects, will not be cut by the weapons of afflictions, will not be carried away by the water of existence, and will not die from the smoke of complete discrimination.
