The aspect of, the aspect of relying on the seven treasures, the aspect of cutting off all poverty, the aspect praised by the wise, the aspect pleasing to the wise, the aspect contemplated by the noble, the aspect of causing faith in the non-noble, the aspect of seeing the noble truth, the aspect of abandoning the faults of the aggregates, the aspect of destroying the faults of the compounded, the aspect of relying on meaning, the aspect of relying on Dharma (Sanskrit, धर्म,Dharma, Law), the aspect of relying on wisdom, the aspect of relying on the definitive meaning of the sutras, the aspect of not doing all sins, the aspect of benefiting oneself and others, the aspect of doing good deeds, the aspect of not regretting, the aspect of going separately, the aspect of obtaining all the Buddha's teachings. These are called the eighty-four aspects of hearing. It is said that from the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness of the Sacred Dharma, there are other merits of listening to the Dharma with joy and teaching the Sacred Dharma. If someone listens to the Dharma, is full of faith, is extremely faithful, subdues the senses, has a pure mind, and has a mind that is extremely faithful to the Three Jewels, whether a householder or a renunciant, wanting to listen to the Sacred Dharma, comes out of the house and goes to a temple or monastery, then with each step he takes, with each step he takes, the merit of Brahma will arise. Furthermore, whoever makes offerings to the speaker of the Dharma is actually making offerings to the Buddha. Whoever makes offerings to the speaker of the Dharma, how he makes offerings, how he dedicates them, will mature accordingly, until the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because listening to the Dharma makes the mind workable. Once the mind is workable, it can destroy the darkness that has entered from beginningless time. Just as the speaker of the Dharma does, no one else can make the mind workable. The kindness of these four cannot be easily repaid. What are the four? That is, the gifts to parents, the Buddha, and the speaker of the Dharma are immeasurable.
