If all the objects of giving are offered to the Tathagata, all these objects of giving cannot even approach one hundredth part of the root of virtue of a single breath of a Bodhisattva who is diligently seeking the Dharma, even up to its cause. What need is there to mention diligently expounding and reciting, reciting a four-line verse? I cannot speak of the limit of that merit. Great King, let alone you giving objects of giving. Great King, what do you think? If after a thousand years, you offer necessities to the Tathagata and the Sangha of monks, is that much? He replied: Blessed One, it is indeed so. The Buddha said: Great King, if you add up all those objects of giving and offer them to one monk, and in this way offer them to all the Sangha of monks, is that much giving? He replied: Blessed One, it is much. Great King, you should believe, you should understand. A son of good family or a daughter of good family, diligently expounding and reciting, with respect, desiring the Dharma, fearing the terrors of samsara, hoping for liberation from suffering, striving to abandon all afflictions, diligently applying themselves to seeking the Dharma, will accumulate even more merit. Great King, if one accepts the giving with faith, and generates the thought: through this food, I will obtain the seeking of the Dharma. Great King, all these things that you give, cannot even approach one hundredth part of the root of virtue of generating this thought, even up to its cause. Great King, therefore, it should be understood in this way, how a Bodhisattva, with reverence for the Dharma, surpasses all material giving in the world. Thus he spoke. In the Sutra of the Chapter on Truth also, Shariputra, what is the wisdom of seeking much learning? Shariputra, whoever is a Buddha's

Having obtained the generation of the mind of enlightenment for the sake of enlightenment, if one does not diligently strive for extensive learning, then it should be known that this is not a bodhisattva who speaks the truth. Shariputra, one cannot attain complete enlightenment to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment merely by name, but only with wisdom can one attain complete enlightenment to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From where does that wisdom necessarily arise? Wisdom arises from extensive learning. Shariputra, therefore, you should make it manifest and you should individually understand it. How can beings who have properly entered the bodhisattva vehicle have doubts about extensive learning? If that bodhisattva acts to benefit sentient beings, the evil demon will create obstacles to enlightenment. Shariputra, that bodhisattva who, having generated the mind of enlightenment, does not diligently strive for extensive learning, is indeed blessed by the evil demon. Therefore, Shariputra, wanting to fully know all the actions of the demon, one should exert effort. Do not focus on words, but understand the actions of the wise, and understand the actions that are famous throughout the world. Shariputra, therefore, with learning that is superior to all the world, with effort that is superior to all the world, and with discipline that is superior to all the world, one will attain complete enlightenment to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, although many seek this state, there are none who diligently and truly practice it. Those will also lose the ten powers of the Tathagata, the wisdom that is superior to all the world, and the aspiration. Therefore, Shariputra, a bodhisattva should speak those words that will please all sentient beings, a bodhisattva should not speak for his own benefit, and a bodhisattva should not be deficient in effort. Shariputra, out of a thousand attempts, perhaps one will succeed, or perhaps none will succeed, Shariputra,

ten thousand, twenty thousand, thirty thousand, forty thousand, fifty thousand, even counting to hundreds of millions of billions, one cannot be accomplished, or it cannot be accomplished at all. Why is that? Shariputra, it is difficult for someone who abides in this practice of a Bodhisattva to manifest. Shariputra, therefore, in order to seek unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, one should generate the mind in this way: I will endure the unbearable suffering of all sentient beings, tolerate the intolerable, and strive with joy to seek the Dharma, not to seek enjoyment. Why is that? Seeking the Dharma is seeking wisdom, and one will not become arrogant or excessively arrogant by gaining desires. Therefore, for beings who have truly entered the Bodhisattva vehicle, wisdom is the main thing, not enjoyment. Shariputra, therefore, the Bodhisattva should diligently engage in this Dharma giving. Thus spoke the Blessed One. From the Samadhi of the Equality of the Nature of All Dharmas, the Youth said: Great King, please listen. In one kalpa, I saw hundreds of thousands of kotis of Buddhas and drew them in pictures. I also inquired about this peaceful Samadhi. Furthermore, in ninety-nine kalpas, and in hundreds of thousands of kotis of thousands of kalpas, I remembered my births in each of them, and was never born from a womb. Then I meditated on this Samadhi, and purely heard the teachings of those Victorious Ones. After hearing, I also generated faith in the teachings, and touched Bodhi without hesitation. Thus it was said. Also in that Sutra, the Youth Bodhisattva Mahasattva, having much learning, has these ten benefits. What are the ten? They are: not being defiled by afflictions, not generating harmful thoughts, being able to discern doubts, making views upright, abandoning wrong paths, abiding on the right path, abiding in the gate of immortality, approaching Bodhi, becoming illuminating to all sentient beings, and the lower realms.
