If it becomes as many as the sands, Ananda, what do you think? Can the size of these fruits and trees be measured, saying that these fruits and trees are this much? Answer: Blessed One, it cannot. The Buddha said: Ananda, the size of the fruits and trees of those stumps with dimensions can be measured. Whatever son of a lineage or daughter of a lineage, in any way, these sentient beings, with this Dharma giving, from obtaining the fruit of stream-entry up to obtaining the state of Arhat, and between generating the mind of enlightenment, abiding in beneficial things, with a mind free from attachment and a mind free from defilement, even if only teaching a four-line verse, the measure of the accumulation of merit cannot be measured. If someone generates a mind of benefit in this way, and causes others to hold, teach, or fully understand even just a four-line verse, then the previous example does not even come close to one percent of that merit, not one thousandth, not one hundred thousandth, not in number, not in fraction, not in counting, not in example, not even in cause. If someone also hears much, and even establishes themselves in just a four-line verse, then they generate many roots of virtue in that way, so it is said. Also, in the Sutra of Miraculous Transformation at the Time of Perfect Peace and Determination, it says: Bhikshu, when the stainless one generates joy, delight, faith, great joy, and mental ease, after those definite hundreds of millions of years have passed, having fully uttered that four-line verse, then going to where the Tathagata Good Protector Great Mountain is, and having arrived, bowing with his head to the feet of the Blessed One, he said this: I have done the work of a great man, I have defeated the mandala of Mara, I have cut off all afflictions, I have purified the essence of enlightenment, I have purified the Buddha's field, I have well obtained the meaning of human existence and ordination, I have completely protected the arising of the Buddha, I have well sought alms in the land.

I have completely purified the offerings. I have fully abided in the place of offerings. I have revealed the treasure of the Dharma. I have grasped the seed of turning the wheel of Dharma. I am endowed with the wealth and possessions of the noble ones. I am not poor, and I possess great wealth. I entertain all sentient beings with the gift of Dharma. I will give the gift of Dharma. I will destroy latent tendencies. I will abandon obscurations. May desire, hatred, and ignorance be completely pacified. I will open the gates of ignorance and craving for existence. I will completely accomplish the three rounds of the twelve-aspect wheel of Dharma. Then, King Immaculate Splendor, having heard this lion's roar near the Ink Grove, said to the Bhagavan Tathagata Good Protector Great Mount: "Bhagavan, in my Ink Grove vicinity, whether it be abandoned by yoga, or correctly abiding within, or exhortation, or much learning, to which is one more diligent?" The Bhagavan replied: "Great King, this bhikshu is more diligent in much learning." He asked: "Bhagavan, how much Dharma has this one who utters such a lion's roar attained?" The reply: "Great King, this bhikshu has taught four-line verses for a thousand years." He asked: "Bhagavan, does merely uttering one four-line verse cause such a lion's roar to be heard near my Ink Grove? Bhagavan, if a lion's roar needs to be uttered, then it should be uttered by me. Because for a thousand years I have offered pleasing Dharma robes, food, bedding, medicine, and utensils to the Tathagata's Shravaka Sangha and the Bodhisattva Sangha." Having said this, the Tathagata Good Protector Great Mount said to King Immaculate Splendor: "Great King, do not speak in this way. Why is that? Because the almsgiving that you, Great King, have done for a thousand years
