Arrogance subdues and makes one lowly. Worldly ignorant beings, with strong self-attachment, thinking themselves superior, harboring pride, their harm subdues the mind, causing distress, unable to endure, suffering greatly. Noble beings possess thoughts of compassion, hold the accomplishment of auspiciousness through patience, for those who have completely abandoned self-grasping, even if harmful beings approach, there is no harm. Instability is the fault of a weak mind, anger and wrong thoughts arise from conceptualization. Correct thoughts give rise to peace in the mind, making the aspect of patience equal. Like the reflection of the moon in water, the conceptualization of patience relies on peace, therefore, noble ones constantly and uninterruptedly become noble. The pacification of conceptualization is called ultimate patience, those who know the true nature of patience say so. Therefore, one should understand that all phenomena in the world are different, and diligently strive to pacify conceptualization. If the eye is ultimately just an eye, why be angry? The ear and so on are also like that, ultimately just an ear, without anger. What is endured in this way is patience dependent on a place, this is not ultimate true patience. Sound and words are of impermanent nature, sound and conceptualization are also impermanent. What is endured in this way is attachment to impermanence, this is not what is said to be supreme patience. Those who do evil do not exist anywhere, and the actions performed do not exist either. What is endured in this way is combined with selflessness, this is not the ultimate of patience. Happiness and suffering, praise and blame, all are interdependent phenomena. What is endured in this way is a place to understand interdependence. Patience is not extreme meditative absorption. This is because one is completely deceived by ignorance, having wrong thoughts, thinking "that is not me." What is endured in this way is the thought of high and low, that is not the opportunity for the ultimate of patience. Sound, language, letters, like beautiful music, each one arises and each one disappears, who can cause what harm to whom? Such patience is also not the ultimate of patience. In order to exhaust my sins, even harming one's own Dharma is not considered, would the Sugata be angry? What is endured in this way is only nominal patience. One should understand that everything changes according to one's own karma, enduring with complete qualities, such a
