Furthermore, one should contemplate one's own body, which is composed of the four elements, as being of the nature of earth, water, fire, and wind, respectively. Then, just as a vessel is filled with various grains, so too should this body be viewed with steadfast wisdom. When a Bodhisattva enters a charnel ground, when he fully observes the nature of a corpse, at that time, he should contemplate the decaying matter that arises from the passing of days and nights as being the same as his own body. A corpse with an extremely swollen, gaping mouth like copper, fallen upon the ground, is like showing its own impure nature to those sentient beings who are attached to the pleasures of samsara. These are the antidotes to desire. Benefiting others and desiring happiness, as well as desire, aspiration, and joy, whatever arises in these states, loving-kindness can be divided into three types. Namely, that which is focused on sentient beings, that which is focused on Dharma, and that which arises naturally and without focus, which is called great loving-kindness. The first is the initial thought, the other is delight in altruistic actions, and the unfocused is the object of practice for attaining forbearance of the unborn Dharma. In order to become familiar with all of these, the order of practice will be explained. First, like practicing impurity, one should practice the intermediate ones (loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity). Because if one knows impurity, one can generate the others. At that time, after becoming accustomed, one should then practice towards the direction of enemies. When a yogi contemplates enemies in one direction as being like friends, then one should practice towards all directions. Just as the practice focused on sentient beings can quickly generate a sense of closeness, the fatigue of practicing focused on Dharma, and so on, does not exist. Similarly, if one dedicates one's own merit so that others may attain the state of Sugata, then this loving-kindness will become extremely excellent, and will make one's own Bodhicitta as stable as a vajra. Furthermore, dedicating the merit of the Buddhas, as well as the Bodhisattvas and other sentient beings, so that all beings may be liberated from the prison of samsara, possessing various kinds of compassionate essence.

Where is the dedication best made? All undoubtedly follow after loving-kindness. They are relatives of it, and it is the antidote to anger. Just as a reflection in a mirror depends on another, what object appears in it? Where is the reality in that? Therefore, things that arise from conditions are without reality. The characteristic of not being born of itself is the very profound emptiness. Those things are not abandoned, nor do they abandon things, for without them, they would certainly not arise, like fire and burning. These twelve links of dependent arising, the later is the result and the earlier is the cause. Ignorance and so on should be understood in order. What is ignorance? Because it is not true, in the five aggregates, it grasps at one, self, permanence, etc. Whatever arises from ignorance, the object of action is these, and desire and so on enter into this. Consciousness arises from this, and it is the nature of examining things. The four non-form aggregates, and the four great elements, are manifested as one self. This is called name and form. That which arises from it, such as the eye, is called the six sense bases. The gathering of the three is manifested as contact. Experiencing all contact, it has the nature of pleasure and so on. Feeling is attachment, which is desire, and it is the aspect of desire. When desire itself increases, it is called grasping. From grasping comes existence, and in that place, the aggregates truly arise. The aging of the aggregates is old age, and also decay is death. Because one desires to die, the inner suffering is sorrow, and whatever lament arises from remembering happiness is weeping. Suffering is the feeling of discomfort in the body arising from the five consciousnesses. Thus, the nature of dependent arising, which is liberated from the two extremes, is like a wheel of various torches, turning with each other as cause. In the sutras such as the Salu Green, with the distinction of outer and inner, the arising of dependent arising should be viewed as two aspects. From the cause of cause and condition, it is again divided into two aspects. Among them, the first inner one should be divided into two aspects, ignorance and so on, mutually.

Those that exist as causal entities, that is the cause of causes here, I have already explained above. Also, the very causes of conditions, namely earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness, are what come together. What is the earth element in the body? It is whatever holds solidity. Whatever retains moisture and so on, that is referred to as the water element. Eating, chewing, and drinking, all of which gradually digest, this body has the characteristic of warmth, that is explained as the fire element. Fully engaging in seven activities, the activity of breathing in and out, whatever this body does, that is shown as the wind element. Whatever emptiness nature is fully visible in this body, in order to open up all opportunities, it is called the space element. What is the consciousness element? Here, it is whatever mind is tainted, and likewise the collection of the five consciousnesses, all joined together. The sprout of name and form, existing in the essence of the seed, the intrinsic nature within, is called the cause of conditions. Likewise, consciousness is the nature of the seed, and karma is the nature of the field. Craving moistens consciousness, and ignorance sows the seed. Karma is like this, I do not think that the seed of consciousness, born from my action, and the actions of the field have been done. Craving is also like this, I do not know that consciousness is moist. Ignorance is also like this, I do not think that is sowing the seed. For that seed of consciousness, with the effort of these conditions, there is no such knowledge that says, 'I am created.' However, the seed of consciousness, relying on the field of karma, moistened by the moisture of existence, and sown by the seed of ignorance, that and those births, that and those sequences, in the mother's womb, in time, the sprout of name and form arises, not from myself, not from others, and not even emanated by Ishvara, this sprout of name and form, does not arise from a cause. Thus, these selfless phenomena, arise as characteristics of illusion. From the collection of cause and condition, continuously arising without ceasing, eye, form, and light, and so on.
