Not born from anything, nor is it an act of foolishness. Furthermore, if one diligently seeks the nature of this, where is it to be found in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases? Nowhere, at no time, has it ever been seen. Is such a stream of mind to be desired? Mind arises from an object. For a moment, one should examine it in this way: Is it different from the object, or is it non-different? One should thoroughly investigate. If one explicitly acknowledges it as different, then all three realms would become devoid of mind. If it is non-different, it is difficult to reverse the inner workings of oneself. The very tip of a finger cannot touch itself. Similarly, the edge of a sword cannot cut itself. Even if well-trained, one cannot mount one's own shoulders. Likewise, mind cannot touch mind, as the All-Knowing One has said. Like a fierce, swirling, and turbulent red wind, this movement of mind is extremely difficult to understand. By what means can one diligently accomplish the attainment of calm abiding, from which arises the glory of the Sugatas? With one-pointedness, without scattering, without distraction, and utterly peaceful, it is said to abide in calm abiding. One should cultivate the expansion of mindfulness of the mind. Without abandoning the nature of the mind, and likewise without disciplining it, this mind is like an illusion. Such is the conduct of the nature of the mind. Those who completely abandon all things, in order to purify the Buddha-fields, dedicating themselves to that pure realm, is said to be the perfect training of the mind. These are the close placements of mindfulness of the mind. Thus, having the close placement of mindfulness of the mind, one should cultivate the close placement of mindfulness of the Dharma, abiding correctly. This, in brief, is to realize all phenomena without effort, abandoning acceptance and rejection. When afflictions arise, there is no attachment, no hatred, no delusion, no peace, no accumulation, and no aggregates. Thus, understanding and practicing in ultimate truth, there is no defilement and no purification. Whatever certainty there is that such are phenomena, here it is rightly called mindfulness of the Dharma. Whoever hears of such phenomena, does not see any difference between Dharma and Buddha, enlightenment and the paths, and all phenomena. Furthermore, in all afflictions, generating artificial perceptions, likewise in all other phenomena, one should thoroughly understand the nature of illusion.
