It is a synonym for what is called "non-contaminated attachment." It has three aspects. As it says in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence: loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is for bodhisattvas who have generated the mind of enlightenment for the first time; loving-kindness focused on the Dharma is for bodhisattvas who have entered into practice; loving-kindness without focus is for bodhisattvas who have obtained forbearance in irreversible Dharma. Also, focusing on the Buddha, focusing on the Bodhisattva, focusing on the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and focusing on sentient beings. Among these, focusing on sentient beings means that one first becomes accustomed to thinking of benefiting and bringing happiness to the sentient being who is most dear to one's heart, and cultivates loving-kindness that is in accordance with that. After that, it is for those who are close. After that, it is for ordinary people. After that, it is for neighbors. After that, it is for those who live in one's own village. Similarly, from other villages to one direction, one cultivates it by thinking about it, spreading it, perfecting it, and abiding in it. It is the same in the ten directions. There is no such practice for focusing on the Buddha and so on. As it says in the Dedication of the Vajra Banner: When that Bodhisattva engages in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, whatever pleasing or displeasing form is seen, and similarly, whatever pleasing or displeasing sound, smell, taste, tactile object, and Dharma, or the great, clear light of happiness that is without fault, or whatever causes mental happiness to arise, accomplishes happiness, causes faith to arise, causes joy to arise, abides in supreme joy, causes satisfaction to arise, reverses mental unhappiness, causes virtuous mind to arise, causes the mind to become workable, causes thought to become soft, and when experiencing that happiness that causes the senses to be completely satisfied, one should dedicate it to all the Buddhas in this way: May these Buddhas, the Bhagavat Buddhas, become even more endowed with the inconceivable happiness of the state of Buddhahood through this dedication! May the happiness of the Buddha's samadhi be perfectly grasped by the incomparable! May the Buddha's infinite happiness greatly increase!
