The Compendium of Trainings by Shantideva The Compendium of Trainings Shantideva In Sanskrit: Śikṣāsamuccayaḥ. In Tibetan: The Compendium of Trainings. Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Due to not having heard, in abysses such as hells, unbearable and limitless sufferings such as burning, you, with untamed minds, have repeatedly experienced. Therefore, in order to hear, rely with extremely vast respect. Having heard, with a mind free from distraction, abandon sins, completely purify the many sins previously committed. And obtain the happiness not previously obtained, and will never fall from happiness. Obtain the inexhaustible supreme bliss of the perfect Bodhisattva, and achieve the unparalleled and perfect state of Buddhahood. Now that you have obtained this precious Dharma, which is extremely difficult to find, listen respectfully with leisure to this well-spoken word. In order to hear the words of the sole benefactor of the three realms, gods, nagas, siddhas, gandharvas, yakshas, garudas, asuras, kinnaras, mahoragas, free spirits, and others, each with joyful minds, listen and come here with faith! Those who possess the Dharmakaya of the Sugata and their retinue, and all who are worthy of homage, I respectfully prostrate. I will speak in concise meaningful words about those who enter the discipline of the Sugata's sons. Nothing unprecedented is spoken of here, nor do I have the skill to compose sentences. Therefore, I do not strive for the sake of others, I compose this treatise to tame my own mind. In order to cultivate virtue, my strength of faith will also increase for a while because of this. If others who share the same fortune as me see these, it will become meaningful. Leisure is extremely difficult to obtain, and having obtained this body that accomplishes the meaning of life. If you do not think about the benefit of this, how can you obtain this perfect body again in the future? As it is said in the Holy Tree Adornment Sutra, it is difficult to obtain freedom from the eight unfree states from the birth of the Holy Heat Winner, it is difficult to be reborn as a human, it is difficult to have pure and complete leisure, it is difficult for a Buddha to appear, it is difficult to have complete faculties, it is difficult to hear the Buddha's teachings.

It is also difficult to find a virtuous friend. It is also difficult to find a true spiritual friend. It is also difficult to closely practice the true teachings. It is also difficult to live righteously. As it is said, in the human world, it is difficult to diligently practice the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma. Therefore, relying on encountering such circumstances, wherever great sentient beings are, just like oneself and others, they do not desire fear and suffering. At that time, who else would protect them? What difference is there between myself and others? When such individual conduct arises, one desires to end the suffering of oneself and all sentient beings, and also desires to reach the ultimate happiness. Therefore, one should strengthen the root of faith and also strengthen the mind of Bodhi. Thus, in the Dharani of the Jewel Heap: 'Having faith in the Victorious One and the Dharma of the Victorious Ones, having faith in the conduct of the sons of the Buddha, having faith in the unsurpassed Bodhi, the minds of great beings arise.' Faith is like a mother, giving rise to all virtues, protecting and increasing them. It dispels doubts and liberates from all rivers. Faith is the symbol of a city of well-being and happiness. Faith is pure and pleasing to the mind. Abandoning arrogance is the root of respect. Faith, like a treasure, wealth, and the best of feet and hands, is the root of accumulating merit. Faith rejoices in complete giving. Faith gives rise to great joy in the Dharma of the Victorious Ones. Faith distinguishes the differences between qualities and wisdom. It is the one who shows and obtains the fruit of Buddhahood. It makes the senses sharp and very clear. The power of faith is not overcome by others. It is the foundation for purifying afflictions. Faith also seeks self-arising qualities. Faith has no attachment to the door of attachment. Abandoning non-leisure is the best of leisure. Faith transcends the path of demons. It is the one who shows the best path of liberation. The uncorrupted seed is the cause of qualities. Faith is the one who gives rise to the Bodhi tree. It increases the qualities of wisdom and distinction. Faith is the one who shows all the Victorious Ones. Those who always have faith and respect for the Buddha, they do not abandon the precepts and trainings. Those who do not abandon the precepts and trainings.
