The lamps are burning, many silk ribbons are hung, the ground is scattered with many fragrant flowers, and incense is burned from incense burners. The base of the throne is made of gold, silver, and lapis lazuli. There are cotton cushions, felt cushions, cushions lined with cotton, brocade cushions, cushions from the Kalinga region, with a mattress on top, and another mattress covering it. Even someone lying on a throne with many silk pillows placed on the left and right will be abandoned in a great charnel ground, a place of extreme terror, with crows, vultures, foxes, corpses, meat, bones, hair, blood, fat, pus, and lymph, the body lying motionless on the ground, to be eaten by ghouls. Even a great king like you, riding on the neck of an elephant, or the back of a horse, or sitting in a chariot, blowing conches, beating drums, beating clay drums, shaking hand drums, playing various kinds of sweet musical instruments, raising umbrellas, victory banners, flags, and various victory banners, waving jeweled-handled fans, waving palm leaf fans, with many elephants, cavalry, and small armies following behind. Princes and Brahmins, ministers who have received instruction, guides, and hundreds and thousands of people with folded hands pay homage to you and praise you, saying, 'Long live the king! Long live the king!' Even having gone out in such a way, before long, one will die motionless in bed, and be carried away by four people. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, wives, sons, daughters, male servants, female servants, workers, those who live on leftovers, beggars, ministers, and the people of the city are all overcome with grief, raising their hands and beating their chests, crying out with extreme sorrow, 'Alas! My son! Alas! My protector! Alas! My brother! Alas! My lord!' Subordinates and the people of the city look on with fear, and carry the body out of the south gate of the city, and bury it underground, or bury it in a wilderness graveyard, to be eaten by crows, vultures, and foxes, etc. Those bones are burned by fire, or thrown into water, or buried underground, and are also ground into powder by wind, sun, and rain, and scattered in all directions, to rot there.

It also changes. Great King, in this way, the bodies of all sentient beings also change in this way. Great King, all conditioned things are impermanent in that way, and unstable in that way, as has been extensively taught. Among them, the afflictions are mainly attachment, hatred, and ignorance. Among these, whichever is most harmful, one should first meditate on its antidote, and its basis should also be completely abandoned. In this regard, for example, in the noble "Cloud of Jewels Sutra," it says: One should rely on the antidote to attachment and completely abandon the causes of the arising of attachment. What is the antidote to attachment? What are the causes of the arising of attachment? Meditating on ugliness is the antidote to attachment. A beautiful woman in the realm is the cause of the arising of attachment. What is meditating on ugliness? It is like this: This body has hair, body hair, nails, teeth, dirt, filth, skin, flesh, bones, tendons, veins, kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, mesentery, cecum, spleen, feces, saliva, spittle, mucus, snot, fat, pus, marrow, grease, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, brain, meninges, and urine. A Bodhisattva, with regard to these things, is of the nature of completely discriminating. One who is of the nature of completely discriminating thinks like this: Even a foolish, ignorant, and unwise child, after knowing these things, does not give rise to a mind of attachment, so what need is there to mention one who possesses the nature of wisdom? Thus, a Bodhisattva should meditate extensively on ugliness, it is said. The Blessed Mother also said: Furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he fully understands this body as it truly is. Subhuti, for example, just as a butcher or a butcher's apprentice slaughters a cow, cuts it into four parts with a sharp knife, and then stands or sits and distinguishes each part separately. Subhuti, in the same way, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he also knows that this body contains the earth element, the water element, and the fire element.
