If asked thoroughly, then that monastic monk should explain the Dharma to those deities as he has heard it. If those deities ask profound questions thoroughly, and the monastic monk is unable to answer, then he should be without arrogance and not despise them for not having learned, but should receive the teachings of the Buddha, strive to learn, and when he has understood those Dharmas that he has not understood, then at that time he should answer all the questions. He should say: I am here to listen to the Dharma, please ask freely. The monk Od-srung (Light Protector) should make those deities understand in this way. Similarly, one who dwells in that monastic place should observe how the grass, trees, vines, medicines, and forests grow, and how they decay, and how these external things are without an owner, immovable, without action, arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions, and not arising if causes and conditions are not complete, thinking that there is no truly existent Dharma of arising and ceasing in this, and thus grasp their characteristics, as the Blessed One said. He also said: When dwelling in that monastic place, one should generate the mind in this way: Like this, I have come here from a long road, alone and without a companion, and there is no companion to encourage me to do good or evil. There are gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, who know the thoughts of my mind. If I dwell in the monastic place and am controlled by an unwholesome mind, then I will be controlled by them. I have come from a long road, alone and without a companion, without reliance, without self, without grasping. If I discriminate due to discrimination of desire, discriminate due to discrimination of malice, discriminate due to discrimination of harm, or discriminate due to discrimination of other unwholesome things, then I will be no different from those beings who delight in noise and gatherings. I will deceive the gods, nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas, and I will also displease the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. In any case, may the gods not ridicule me, and
