Then, (thinking) say to the great king, 'Please sit down as if laying out a seat.' If (the king) sits down, (you) also sit down together. If (the king) does not sit down, (you) also do not sit down together. If (the king) is agitated, say to the great king, 'In your land, those monks and Brahmins who are virtuous, possess qualities, and are learned, in places not disturbed by wild people and monkeys, it is truly rare.' If (the king) is stable, gentle, and has subdued senses, and it is appropriate to teach him the Dharma, then teach him various Dharmas. If (the king) does not like to hear various Dharmas, then teach him the Dharma that corresponds to renunciation. If (the king) still does not like to hear the Dharma that corresponds to renunciation, then teach him the vast qualities of the Tathagata. If Brahmins, royalty, villagers, or country people come, arrange things appropriately according to the situation. In this way, the learned can satisfy the minds of those who listen to the Dharma, and these beings will also develop joy, faith, and respect. Thus it is said. Ninth Chapter. In the Sutra of the Question of the Fierce Householder, it is also said: Furthermore, householder, a Bodhisattva who has renounced and dwells in solitude should contemplate thus: 'Why do I dwell in solitude? Merely dwelling in solitude is not the practice of a renunciate. For here there are those who are untamed, unhidden, unpacified, untamed, unindustrious, and unzealous. Just as deer, monkeys, many birds, thieves, and outcastes also dwell here in great numbers. They do not possess the qualities of a renunciate. Why do I dwell in solitude? I should contemplate thus, in order to perfect the meaning of a renunciate.' Similarly, householder, a Bodhisattva who has renounced and dwells in solitude should contemplate: 'Why have I come to solitude?' Because I am afraid and frightened, I have come to solitude. Afraid and frightened of what? Afraid and frightened of busyness, afraid and frightened of association, afraid and frightened of desire, hatred, and ignorance, afraid and frightened of pride, arrogance, and deceit.

Moreover, they fear and dread attachment, jealousy, and stinginess. They fear and dread forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects. They fear and dread the demon of the aggregates. They fear and dread the demon of the afflictions. They fear and dread the demon of the Lord of Death. They fear and dread the demon of the sons of the gods. They fear and dread the perverted view of permanence in impermanence. They fear and dread the perverted view of happiness in suffering. They fear and dread the perverted view of self in no-self. They fear and dread the perverted view of purity in impurity. They fear and dread the mind, intellect, and consciousness. They fear and dread craving. They fear and dread samsara. They fear and dread obscurations, severance, and all arising. They fear and dread the view of the aggregates as a real group. They fear and dread grasping at a self and grasping at what belongs to a self. They fear and dread excitement. They fear and dread regret and doubt. They fear and dread evil friends. They fear and dread gain and respect. They fear and dread unwholesome spiritual friends. They fear and dread holding what has not been seen as seen. They fear and dread holding what has not been heard as heard. They fear and dread holding what has not been remembered as remembered. They fear and dread holding what has not been distinguished as distinguished. They fear and dread holding what is not known as known. They fear and dread the defilements of ascetics. They fear and dread thinking of harming each other. They fear and dread the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. They fear and dread death and rebirth in all realms of existence. They fear and dread going to the hells of sentient beings, the realm of animals, and the realm of hungry ghosts. They fear and dread unfavorable conditions. In short, they fear and dread contemplating all unwholesome dharmas. I, fearing such fears and dreads, have come to a solitary place. Similarly, apply this to other householders who, as bodhisattvas, have gone forth and, fearing and dreading, dwell in solitary places. Therefore, whatever slight fear arises in them, all of that is me.
