If one considers accomplishment to be more important than one's own benefit, then even when in a state of anger, one can guide others and, with suffering as a precursor, immediately obtain the vow to not commit the act again in the future. If one is angry in order to avert harm, then what fault is there in anger? If one opens the opportunity, it will nourish the habit of anger, which will lead to the fault of diminishing compassion. It will be explained below that if one cuts it off, one will cut off the root. Even if it benefits that sentient being, the decline of a Bodhisattva's compassion will cause the great benefit of sentient beings to be interrupted. It should be understood that the example in the chapter of the Noble Truth-Speaker is one of abiding in compassion. There, the reason for strongly restraining compassion is because one is skilled in worldly affairs, in order to guide worldly people. Conversely, if one becomes angry with a Bodhisattva who wishes to benefit, then that one will also become a non-Bodhisattva, and it will be harmful to both. Attachment is also a fault, as it is taught: People who rely on desires will become dull and even kill their parents. Relying on desires, they will also kill those who possess discipline. Therefore, it should always be abandoned. If it is seen that attachment to one's own happiness causes one to disregard the suffering of others, then for those who are not accustomed to regarding the suffering of others as their own suffering, that view is true. However, for those who are very accustomed, neither of those faults will occur. As it is said in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: Ananda, for example, if a certain person were to be burning from the feet to the crown of the head, burning very intensely and becoming a single flame, and another person were to come near and say to him: Hey, young man, come here! Before the fire on your body is extinguished, meet with and enjoy the five qualities of desirable sense pleasures, play, rejoice, and indulge! Ananda, what do you think? Would that person, before the fire on his body is extinguished, meet with and enjoy the five qualities of desirable sense pleasures, play, rejoice, and indulge? Ananda replied: Blessed One, no. The Blessed One said: Ananda, carefully consider, that person, before the fire on his body is extinguished, meet with the satisfying
