Praising oneself and disparaging others, not allowing others to surpass oneself, and not generating a definite thought in one's mind, this is the action of pride. Generating excessive pride, knowingly concealing the merits of those worthy of praise, speaking unpleasant words, and becoming displeased by the praise of others' virtues, this is the action of pride. Correctly knowing that "This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is the teaching of the perfectly enlightened Buddha," hating people, hating the Dharma, abandoning the true Dharma, and also causing others to argue and regress, this is the action of pride. Desiring high seats, cherishing high seats, seeking Dharma that is not assigned to tasks, dwelling in places where others serve, and being very happy, not standing up to greet elderly Sthavira monks who have long practiced Brahmacharya, not inquiring, and not showing respect, this is the action of pride. Making a face with an angry frown, not smiling, without gentle and pleasant words, always seeking faults and opportunities with an arrogant mind, this is the action of pride. Falling into excessive pride, not going to the wise, not relying on them, not serving them, not showing respect, not asking: What is good? What is not good? What actions will bring long-term benefit, advantage, and happiness? What actions will bring long-term harm, disadvantage, and unhappiness? Not asking these questions, becoming more and more foolish because of ignorance, being blinded by delusion, and overwhelmed by pride, not seeing the future, this is the action of pride. Being overwhelmed by excessive pride, not rejoicing in the appearance of the Buddha, causing the previous roots of virtue to be exhausted, not generating new ones, speaking what should not be spoken, fighting, and increasing disputes, abiding in the Dharma in this way, even if falling into a state of great desire, even if gaining power by generating the strength of Bodhicitta, but therefore not seeing the appearance of the Buddha for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, let alone hearing the Dharma? This is the tenth action of pride. O sons of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, these ten actions of pride are like this.
