I do not proclaim. The Blessed One has spoken in many ways about not boasting of virtue and confessing sins. Therefore, because of displeasure, sins are exhausted through confession. Merit does not thus become exhausted, nor does it become exhausted because of pleasure; for the sake of sentient beings, proclaiming with an undefiled mind is without fault. As it is said in the Jewel Cloud Sutra, it is like a doctor praising himself by analogy, which is shown to be without fault. Moreover, one who desires to protect merit should fear gain and respect, should always abandon arrogance, should befriend Bodhisattvas, and should abandon doubt about the Dharma. This is extensively taught in the Jewel Heap Sutra. O Light Protector Bodhisattva, the virtuous Dharmas that arise and occur, endowed with four qualities, will be completely exhausted, and those virtuous Dharmas will not increase. What are the four? Namely: seeking secret words that distance the world with manifest pride, looking to the household with excessive attachment to gain and respect, hating and slandering Bodhisattvas, and abandoning Sutras that have not been heard or grasped. In the scriptures of the venerable Sarvāstivādins, it is also said: O monks, a monk should prostrate with all his limbs to the stupa of hair and nails, and observe the mind and the interval in between. Venerable one, it is so. O monks, the amount of sand there is from the ground trod by this monk down to the golden wheel at eighty-four thousand yojanas, that many times a hundredfold will this monk enjoy the sovereignty of a universal monarch. Then, the venerable Ānanda, where the Blessed One was, bowed with folded palms and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if the Blessed One says that the root of virtue of a monk is so great, then Blessed One, where will those roots of virtue diminish, be completely purified, and be completely exhausted? Ānanda, I have not seen such a thing as treating brahmacharya with brahmacharya, yet causing harm and damage to brahmacharya.

Therefore, the attendant will cause these great roots of virtue to diminish, become completely purified, and be completely exhausted. Since the attendant is like this, then for any contrary matter, do not harm with the mind, what need is there to mention the body with consciousness? This should be proclaimed. In the 《Arya Manjushri's Play Sutra》, it is said: Anger, called anger, destroys the roots of virtue accumulated for hundreds of kalpas, therefore it is called anger. In the 《Arya Tree Arrangement Sutra》, the night goddess, with the power of protecting all sentient beings, also said when recounting past realizations: They gather non-virtuous deeds of mutual contempt, and the measure of life will also diminish, and complexion, strength, and happiness will also completely diminish. Here, it is said "always" in order to strongly show that even on a hundred roads, one should not be arrogant. How should gains and respect be accepted? As it is said in the 《Jewel Cloud Sutra》: If a Bodhisattva obtains a pile of jewels as large as Mount Sumeru, he should accept it. Even if he obtains something bad, he should accept it. Why is that? Because he thinks like this: These sentient beings are miserly, greedy, driven by desire, and stingy. With that cause, that condition, and that basis, just like being oppressed by a great mass of water, those beings who sink and float in the ocean of samsara will thereby obtain meaning, benefit, and great happiness for a long time. Thinking like this, after accepting it, he will not take it as his own, and will not generate a mind of attachment. Otherwise, he will do things for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha in common with all sentient beings, and will also benefit suffering sentient beings, and will also praise and greatly rejoice the donor of generosity. It's like that. Similarly, in that same sutra, it is said: He will also not be arrogant because of generosity. Again, in that same sutra, it is said: If again, with that cause, that condition, and that basis, fame, sound, and verses arise, he will not be arrogant because of this, he will not generate pride, he will not generate arrogance, he will think like this: Before long, this fame, sound, and verses rely on whom, and who rely on it
