From "May all beings attain enlightenment, but not I," to "Bhagavan, this is a true statement." Although giving accomplishes its own purpose, one does not impose one's own burden on beings without merit, fearing that the benefit of beings will be impaired. If one does not see the benefit of beings being impaired, then what difference does it make whether it is done by oneself or used by others to benefit beings? Therefore, a Bodhisattva does not abandon his own merit in order to accomplish the good of others. If one fears the suffering of the evil realms, then the other also fears that same suffering. If one abandons it, thinking that suffering does not harm oneself, then as it appears in the sutras mentioned above, it will be accompanied by faults. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels, beginning with "These four light protectors are disguised as Bodhisattvas," it says, "What I seek is my own happiness, not to eliminate the suffering of beings." Therefore, one should reproach me in the manner of the one who asked forcefully. This Bodhisattva's training is like what the noble Asanga taught in the Sutra of the Collection of True Dharma: "Son of good family, how should one know to abide in practice? Answer: One does not treat sentient beings wrongly. Question: How does one not treat sentient beings wrongly? Answer: One does not abandon great love and great compassion for sentient beings." Subhuti asked, "What is the great love of the Bodhisattvas?" He answered, "One gives one's body, life, and all roots of virtue to all sentient beings, and does not even expect to be helped in return." He asked, "What is the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas?" He answered, "One wishes that all sentient beings attain enlightenment first, and not oneself." Furthermore, in that very sutra, it is said, "Great compassion is the root of all the Bodhisattva's trainings." Anyone who seeks the Bodhisattva's fruit should seek it in this way.

Because, whoever, as a great benefactor and a great field of merit, performs great generosity, the resulting accumulation of merit, like a vast ocean, is undoubtedly something that the Bhagavan cannot reverse, and it has been undoubtedly taught. If it were not so, then one would only die in poverty. In the Sutra of Miraculous Transformations of Perfect Tranquility, it says: Great King, if you were to add up all the offerings of a thousand years and give them to one bhikshu, and similarly, give all the offerings separately to all the bhikshus, and if someone who is diligent in reciting and reading, with reverence, desiring the Dharma, takes what is suitable for great generosity with faith, thinking, 'With this generosity, I will begin to seek the Dharma everywhere,' then even one percent of giving away all the roots of virtue to this would not come close. What was taught there was spoken in the context of those who are attached to the happiness of the household. According to the previously stated reasoning, there is no fault. Guarding possessions has been briefly explained. Now, guarding merit will be discussed. Therein: By abandoning attachment to self-interest and fruition, one will guard all virtues. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Son of No Attachment: He does not guard morality for the sake of kingship, nor for the sake of heaven, nor for Indra, nor for Brahma, nor for enjoyment, nor for power, nor for form, nor for beauty, nor for fame. Thus it is applied. He does not guard morality out of fear of the terrors of hell. Likewise, he does not guard morality out of fear and dread of the animal realm and the world of Yama. Otherwise, he guards morality in order to mock the conduct of the Buddha, and even to benefit all sentient beings, to accomplish happiness, and to seek happiness. Thus it is applied. A Bodhisattva who possesses such a heap of morality will not completely fall away from the ten dharmas. What are the ten? They are: the wheel-turning

Not losing the kingdom of the wheel-turning king, and also being cautious about this and desiring enlightenment. Not losing the position of Indra, and also being cautious about this and desiring enlightenment, and desiring to see the Buddha. Similarly, not losing the position of Brahma, obtaining irreversible Buddha-sight, not losing listening to the Dharma, diligently practicing the Dharma as it was obtained, not losing the bodhisattva's chosen deity, uninterrupted courage, accomplishing all virtuous dharmas, and not losing meditation. Similarly, combine them. Thus, the bodhisattva mahasattva who abides in the aggregate of morality is always bowed down to by the gods. The nagas always praise him. Yakshas always bow down to him. Gandharvas always make offerings to him. The Naga kings and the Asura kings always remember him. Brahmins, kings, merchants, and householders always pray to him. The wise always go to him. The Buddhas always remember him. The world, including the gods, honors him as a teacher. He is compassionate to all beings. Similarly, combine them. He does not go to four places. What are the four? They are as follows: Except for maturing beings, he does not go to places without leisure. He does not go to fields without Buddhas. He does not go to birth in the families of those with wrong views. He does not go to all the evil realms, as it is said. Therefore, one should protect the merit that was previously given, so that it is not taken away by afflictions. The merit that has been given, one should not desire its fruition except for the benefit of others. Furthermore, wanting to protect merit, one should not regret it. As it is said in the "Fierce Interrogation Sutra": "After giving, one should not generate a mind of regret." Just like that, if one makes the result small, then the power will also become small. Just as regret exhausts sins, so too will merit be exhausted, this is his thought. Even if it has been done
