It is said that it should be upheld. Regarding the punishment for this, it is said in the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels: 'Holder of Light, those who are lax and do not properly guard, and who fall away from the qualities of the virtuous ascetic, those who wear robes on their bodies, will not generate respect for them. Holder of Light, for them, there is a hell called the short-lived sentient being who harms the color and form of the virtuous ascetic. Holder of Light, in that short-lived sentient being hell, while transforming into the form of a virtuous ascetic, they suffer the harm of burning clothes, burning heads, burning bowls, burning cushions, and burning bedding. Whatever they possess and enjoy all burns, burns intensely, spreads universally and intensely, and burns, and that becomes a single flame, and those harmed by the color and form of the virtuous ascetic will experience it.' In the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it is also said: 'A Bodhisattva without concealment, if the body is weak or the body is unable to perform, then he should dwell in a monastery. He should think thus: 'For the sake of counteracting afflictions, by means of the Tathagata's practice of qualities, in any case, I want to abandon afflictions while dwelling in the monastery, and that is how it should be done. For that monastery, do not generate attachment, do not be attached.' He should think thus: 'We should benefit the benefactors who give alms, we should not nourish ourselves.' Also in that same sutra, it says: 'When they sleep, they should lie on their right side, with one foot on top of the other, the body thoroughly covered with Dharma robes, and while possessing mindfulness and awareness, they should sleep with the intention of light and the intention of rising, and they should not be attached to the pleasure of sleep. Nor should they be attached to the pleasure of leaning. Otherwise, they sleep only for the sake of the existence and survival of the great elements, and constantly and continuously they also manifestly turn towards the side of virtue.' All enjoyments should be blessed in this way, for the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, if one enjoys out of craving for oneself, it will become a downfall accompanied by afflictions. Moon Lamp.

It is said in the Sutra, "Those who obtain delicious food and merit, and eat and drink without diligence in yoga, that food becomes poison for them, like a calf not washing the lotus root." Also, in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra, the Blessed One fully taught the use of offerings given with faith. Then, from that very assembly, two hundred yogic monks, having heard this Dharma discourse, rejoiced greatly, shedding tears and saying, "Blessed One, we would rather die than partake of even a single morsel of alms given with faith until we have attained the fruit." The Blessed One said, "Noble beings, well done, well done! This profound secret is adorned by those who possess shame and regret, and who fear the faults of the next world." Light Protector, I have given offerings with faith to two monks. Which two? The endowed and the liberated. Monks, the endowed monk, practicing yoga, having entered my teaching, sees all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, understands all conditioned phenomena as suffering, believes that all phenomena are without self, and realizes that Nirvana is peace. Even if he were to partake of offerings given with faith as vast as Mount Meru, his merit would become exceedingly pure. Those who give and those who are the patrons, from whom offerings are partaken with faith, the ripening of their merit will become great wealth and benefit. Why is that? Monks, among the objects of merit arising from material things, abiding in loving-kindness is the best. Light Protector, if a monk, having partaken of the robes, alms, bedding, and utensils of the giver and the patron, abides in immeasurable liberation of mind, then the ripening of the giver and the patron should also be known as immeasurable. Light Protector, the great oceans in the three thousand great thousand world systems may be completely exhausted, but the cause of that (monk's) merit is completely
