If you receive a lot of alms, you should eat them in moderation. You should also perform the ritual of discarding, scattering some of the alms on any stone slab, thinking: 'I give this to the wild animals and birds who want mixed food, let them enjoy this alms.' Furthermore, it is said: 'Do not develop any attachment to the taste of good food at all.' Think like this: 'I should not purify my body with food that purifies the body and mind, like a low-caste person.' Why? Because no matter how much good food you eat, it will eventually turn into pus, eventually become discordant, and eventually become foul-smelling. Therefore, I should not crave good food, I should learn this way.' Practice in the same way. You should generate the mind like this: 'Do not (think) that only men give me alms, not women; or only women give me alms, not men; or only boys give me alms, not girls; or only girls give me alms, not boys; or I get good, not bad; or I get respected, not disrespected; or I get it easily, not with effort; or men and women, boys and girls will respect me; or they will think of me as soon as I go; or I need to stay; or I will get very abundant; or I will get all kinds of delicious food, not bad food like poor people's food,' do not generate any unpleasant thoughts. Practice in the same way: Most sentient beings are greedy for taste, and commit evil deeds for food, thereby being reborn in hell. Those who know the Dharma, are not greedy, not attached, not deluded by taste, are content with the tongue sense, and can sustain life with whatever bad food, they, after death, at the time of death, will be reborn in the heavens, among gods and humans, will go to the good realms, and after being reborn as gods, will enjoy nectar.

will be eaten. Light Guardian, in this way, a ভিক্ষু who practices alms should cut off attachment to taste. With a firm mind, even if he eats seven-day-old stale food, he should not feel disgusted. Why is that? Because I eat food to nourish my body and accumulate the resources for the noble path. Similarly, Light Guardian, if clouds gather and it rains, and the ভিক্ষু who practices alms is unable to go for alms, he should share the food of loving-kindness. Abiding in mindfulness of the Dharma, if he fasts for two or three days, he should think like this: Like the pretas and the beings in Yama's world who have committed evil deeds, even for a hundred years, they cannot find a bit of ash from saliva to eat. Therefore, I should abide in mindfulness of the Dharma properly, and should not make my body or mind weak. I should not care about hunger and thirst. I should generate the thought: I should diligently practice the noble path without interruption. Similarly, in whatever house one performs pure alms, one should sit on a mat and speak about the Dharma until the pure alms are completed. Then, taking the alms, one should rise from the mat and leave. Light Guardian, a ভিক্ষু who practices alms should not complain, should not flatter, and should not pretend. What is complaining? It is saying these words to others: My alms are bad, my alms are rough. I have never eaten like this before without being full. My alms are shared with many people. I ate little and was not full, so my body is weak. Like this, whatever kind of complaining sign it may be, this is called pretending in the mind. A ভিক্ষু who practices alms should not do all these things. Whatever comes into the bowl, whether it is bad or good, little or much, clean or unclean, it should be eaten. Without any suffering, with a completely pure mind, with much mindfulness of the Dharma, nourishing the body, and closely showing the noble path.

Therefore, one should eat the alms food obtained in this way. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Fierce One, "If someone takes alms food and is able to perfect the benefit of oneself and others, I allow that Bodhisattva to go as a guest." Thus, for a while, one should always protect the body with milk medicine. However, fish and meat are not allowed, because they are forbidden in the Lankavatara Sutra. It is said that a Bodhisattva, being of a compassionate nature, should not eat any meat. Similarly, it should be combined and understood: Because of confusion and relatives, and because of the production of semen and blood, beings become frightened, therefore yogis should not eat meat. Meat and onions and garlic, and various kinds of alcohol, as well as leeks and garlic, the yogi should always avoid. Ghee should also be avoided for smearing. Beings who rely on beds, because the pores will decay, therefore one should not sleep on a bed. Similarly, it should be combined and understood: For the sake of profit, one kills sentient beings; for the sake of meat, one gives wealth. Both of these are sinful, and will be imprisoned in places of weeping and so on. Whoever violates the vows that can be endured, and eats meat with evil intentions, for the sake of destroying the two worlds, takes asceticism from the teachings of Shakya. Those with sinful karma will also fall into extremely terrible hells. In places called demons and so on, those who eat meat will be cooked. For the three kinds of pure meat, even if unexamined, unobtained, and unrequested, it is not possible to abandon them, therefore one should not eat meat. Yogis should not eat meat, this is what I and the Buddhas have said. Beings eating each other will be born into the species of meat-eaters. They will be born into those who smell bad, are slandered, and are crazy. They will also be born again and again as outcasts and butchers. They will be born into the species of Dakinis and the species of meat-eaters. Those lowest of people will be born into the wombs of Rakshasas and cats. Like Elephant Strength, Great Cloud, Nirvana, Angulimala, and also in the Lankavatara Sutra, it is said: I have completely abandoned meat. Those who shamelessly eat what is condemned by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas.
