Because of abandoning meat and the like, one will always be born as a madman. Brahmins and yogis, Those with wisdom and those with wealth, They will be born. Through seeing, hearing, and doubting, Completely condemn all meats. Those born into meat-eating lineages, Speculators will not know. Just as desire is to liberation, Becoming an obstacle, Likewise, meat and alcohol, etc., Will also become obstacles. In the future, Meat-eating, ignorant speakers, Will say that meat is without sin and permissible, Saying that it was spoken by the Buddhas. Food is like medicine, And also like the flesh of a son, Suitable and unsuitable, Yogis consume food. Associating with lions and tigers, And with foxes and the like, I abide in loving-kindness, Always and in every way condemn. Because it contradicts the Dharma of liberation, Meat that becomes an obstacle between people, Therefore, it should not be eaten, This is the victory banner of the noble ones. Thus it is said. In the chapter on possessing wisdom, it is said that if eating meat is for the purpose of accomplishing great meaning, then there is no fault. It says: "When a monk does this at the time of death, The sound of meditation in Jambudvipa, Will always disappear for sentient beings, By nourishing this, one can also attain meditation." Thus it is said. This is to strive for great compassion, and there is no fault because there is no doubt that he does not have loving-kindness. The Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra says: The charnel ground master should not be without meat and noble ones, which is said to be for the benefit of sentient beings of other natures different from this. The Vinaya says that if one eats three kinds of completely pure meat, it will not become an obstacle to abandonment. This is to eliminate the arrogance of those who think that complete abandonment is the only way to purity, and to abandon those who, although they have the potential, cannot enter the Dharma because of attachment to it. Thus, the Lankavatara Sutra also says: Proclaiming the Dharma, and from there gradually establishing the basis of learning, establishing three kinds like the rungs of a ladder, and then prohibiting those who have done it for those purposes, and then even prohibiting the flesh of those who have died by their own hand. The smoke of constancy

That has been said. The healing medicine for illness should also be described. Even in the Vinaya of the Hearers, it is said that one should sell one's alms bowl and Dharma robes to protect the body, so that one's own benefit and pure conduct may abide. What need is there to mention the body of a Bodhisattva, which is the cause for completely saving countless beings? Such a fully endowed joy of leisure is difficult to obtain. To explain this well, the Bhagavan has taught that one should closely associate oneself with medicine in this and that situation. In the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra, it is also said: When one has taken up the precepts, whether there is sunlight or not, one may use these things to nourish the body, such as butter, sesame oil, honey, brown sugar, tree sap, or fruit juice. These things are not allowed to be eaten. Even if one sees others eating, one should not generate anger or miserliness. Furthermore, if a Bodhisattva who does not usually accept food is in danger of losing his life or hindering his virtuous activities due to illness, then when the illness is severe, he should, without regret or doubt, regard it as medicine and take it with a close mind. Regarding the use of clothing, it is taught in the Sutra Requested by the Powerful One: Because of shame and modesty, one covers oneself with a sense of decency; to protect oneself from the touch of flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes; to maintain the steadfastness of the signs of a renunciate; these robes, one should think of them as objects of offering for the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, and take them up properly for the sake of offering. These robes have had their color changed by the merit of renunciation and freedom from desire, and not by desire. These robes are in accordance with near pacification and not in accordance with the blazing of afflictions. Covering oneself with these robes is for turning away from evil and engaging in virtuous deeds, and not for pursuing luxurious adornment. One should know that these robes are in accordance with the assembly of the Noble Path, and one should not associate with defilement even for a moment. These robes
