To be respectful in walking, there should be mindfulness of body movement; to perform the four activities, there should be mindfulness of action; to protect against occasional disturbances in behavior, there should be mindfulness of observing in order to perfect behavior; when the time to speak arrives, there should be mindfulness of restraining the expressions of hands, feet, head, and face that become very unseemly due to the influence of disbelief, agitation, anger, and partiality towards relatives and friends; when listening, there should be mindfulness of not speaking more than the sound that is enough to understand the meaning of what is to be said; when faults that may cause others to doubt occur, and when encountering untrained people and feeling afraid, there should be mindfulness of restraining one's own mind; there should be mindfulness of constantly establishing the mind on the pillars of insight and tranquility; there should be mindfulness of repeatedly examining the state of the mind; when a large crowd gathers, no matter what, even if almost nothing is missed, there should be mindfulness of guarding mindfulness as it has been taught, there should be restraining mindfulness. Thus, these mindfulnesses will accomplish the abandonment of fruitless actions. Mindfulness also arises from extreme respect. Respect is the tendency of things to manifest from the heart, and it is the antidote to overcoming arrogance. Respect is the greatness of peace. If understood, diligence will arise. So, what is "ཞེ་བ"? In the sutra taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it says: What is taught in tranquility? What is the inexhaustible of tranquility? It is when the mind is tranquil, extremely tranquil, nearly tranquil, not distracted, the senses are subdued, not arrogant, not frivolous, not speaking nonsense, without instability, not wavering, tamed, guarded, ashamed, ashamed, capable, focused, delighting in solitude, abandoning bustle, delighting in seclusion, body secluded, mind without defilement, tending towards solitary places and contemplating, not desiring sin, therefore until guarding behavior, knowing the time, knowing the measure, knowing the appropriate, knowing the reason, easy to satisfy, easy to nourish, and so on.

So! What is the greatness of that peace? It is the ability to generate knowledge of what is truly like it is. For example: In perfect equanimity, one will come to know, as the Buddha has said. As it is said in the Sutra of the Truly Lovable Dharma: By placing the mind in equanimity, one will see things as they truly are. By seeing things as they truly are, the Bodhisattva will develop great compassion for all sentient beings. He thinks to himself: I must enable all sentient beings to attain this door of Samadhi and to see all things as they truly are. Driven by this great compassion, he will perfect the training in higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom, and will manifest the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. Therefore, I must abide in unwavering and unrelaxed morality, as it is said. The greatness of peace is this, and also the liberation from the endless sufferings of the lower realms and the realization of the nature of perfect bliss that transcends both the mundane and the supramundane. Just as one who is trapped in a burning house desires cool water, one should cultivate diligence with this desire. By doing so, one will become respectful of the trainings, and from that, mindfulness will arise. With mindfulness, one will abandon meaningless actions, and when meaningless actions are abandoned, no harm will occur. Therefore, one who desires to protect the body should seek the root of mindfulness and constantly abide in mindfulness. Therefore, in the "Inquiry of the Powerful One," speaking to the Bodhisattva in the role of a householder, it is said: He should abstain from intoxicating drinks such as grain alcohol and mixed alcohol. He should be free from drunkenness, intoxication, confusion, foul language, frivolity, rudeness, distraction, and should abide in mindfulness and possess awareness. In the same text, speaking to the Bodhisattva in the role of a renunciate, it is said: Mindfulness and awareness are non-distraction. Among these, mindfulness is the noble crest

In the Sutra of Precious Accumulation, it is said: 'What kind of mindfulness prevents all afflictions from arising? What kind of mindfulness prevents all demonic activities from finding an opportunity? What kind of mindfulness prevents falling into wrong paths and evil destinies? What kind of mindfulness, like a gatekeeper, prevents all unwholesome mental states and mental events from finding an opportunity? This is called true mindfulness.' Mindfulness is taught in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: 'When walking, one clearly knows that one is walking; when standing, one clearly knows that one is standing; when sitting, one clearly knows that one is sitting; when lying down, one clearly knows that one is lying down.' One clearly knows whatever posture the body is in. Similarly, one should combine this: when walking and coming and going, one should also act with mindfulness. Looking, gazing, contracting, extending, wearing monastic robes, holding a begging bowl, wearing a kasaya, eating, drinking, chewing, sleeping, awakening, coming, going, standing, sitting, falling asleep and not falling asleep, speaking and not speaking, and when focusing inward, one should act with mindfulness. Discipline is the accomplishment of samadhi, as it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: 'Quickly attain samadhi free from afflictions; this is the benefit of pure discipline.' Therefore, all the causal conditions for samadhi should be known to be included within discipline. Therefore, in order to seek samadhi, one should have the nature of mindfulness and awareness. Similarly, in order to seek discipline, one should also strive to practice samadhi. As that sutra says when speaking of the benefits of samadhi: 'That is not without rituals, but dwells well in various rituals. The yogi's place of activity, one should practice and abandon non-places of activity, dwell without suffering, guarding and subduing the senses.' Discipline and samadhi, these two mutually increase each other, and also completely purify the mind. This is the training of a Bodhisattva.
