One who delights in sleep: His wisdom will become very weak, his mind will also completely decline, he will always lose wisdom. Anyone who delights in dullness and sleep is ignorant, lazy, indolent, and has scattered wisdom. Non-humans will find his flaws, and he will be harmed when living in the forest. Anyone who delights in dullness and sleep, he will always not want good intentions, he will not generate a desire for the Dharma, but will instead like unlawful things. Anyone who delights in dullness and sleep, he is ignorant and his desire for the Dharma declines, like a child completely losing all merits, destroying good deeds, and going to darkness. Anyone who delights in dullness and sleep will become fearful and his mind will be extremely depressed, he will not always be very happy, oppressed by sleep, and his body will also become relaxed. Anyone who delights in dullness and sleep becomes unaware of himself, becomes lazy, envies those who have the power of diligence, and speaks unpleasant words to those who have diligence. Thus it is said. Similarly, anyone who can destroy all the darkness of suffering, completely cut off the root of evil destinies, and is praised by all Buddhas, should always abide in that supreme diligence. Thus it is said. Because of liking work, when the lama exhorts, one feels uncomfortable in the heart and does not accept following the teachings, he will quickly lose discipline, these faults are caused by liking work. Always thinking about the things done while living at home, he will always feel pain, he will not meditate and renounce, these faults are caused by liking work. His attachment will increase, he will be attached to various tastes, he will not be happy with a little satisfaction, these faults are caused by liking work. He will like many retinues, and will be very painful when losing them, he will be driven like a donkey, these faults are caused by liking work. Similarly, day and night, without other thoughts in mind, he always thinks about food and clothing, he will always not want merits, these faults are caused by liking work. He

are like the actions of worldly people. They delight in speech that is unreasonable and do not delight in speech that is reasonable. These faults arise from delighting in work. Thus it is established. Then, Maitreya, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, said to the Bhagavan, "Those Bodhisattvas who abandon the supreme Dharma and engage in evil deeds have very little wisdom and their wisdom will completely decline." After he had spoken, the Bhagavan said to Maitreya, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, "Maitreya, it is just as you say. Those Bodhisattvas who abandon the supreme Dharma and engage in evil deeds will have very little wisdom. Maitreya, I have shown it to you; you should understand it. Those Bodhisattvas who have no diligence, no meditation, no renunciation, and do not seek recitation and extensive learning are not ordained in the teachings of the Tathagata. Maitreya, the teachings of the Tathagata are distinguished by meditation and renunciation, assembled by wisdom, abide in wisdom, and are distinguished by diligent effort, but not by the affairs of householders and idle talk. The actions of those who strive for what is unreasonable and delight in samsara are like this: for example, being engrossed in idle talk and worldly affairs. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should not generate desire for this. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva who is devoted to idle talk were to fill this three-thousand-great-thousand world system with stupas made of the seven precious jewels, he would not please me, would not be considered to have served me, and would not be considered to have respected me. Thus it is established. Furthermore, those Bodhisattvas who are devoted to idle talk and fill the entire Jambudvipa should serve and honor one Bodhisattva who is devoted to transmission and recitation. A Bodhisattva who is devoted to transmission and recitation is worth more than the entire Jambudvipa.
