Not looking at the house of (bhikshus) and the house of almsgiving, abandoning unpleasant words, if one possesses these four dharmas of loving-kindness, it is as previously stated. There are also four. What are the four? Completely abandoning beings with little learning, not gathering retinues, relying on remote dwellings, and diligently engaging in the yoga of self-taming and tranquility, these are the four. Again, from that very text, it says that a Bodhisattva who is a beginner in loving-kindness, having obtained the power of increasing wisdom, should completely abandon gain and respect, and see the faults of gain and respect. Similarly, combining them, one should completely abandon the love of bustle and see the faults of loving bustle. One should completely abandon the love of talking and see the faults of loving talking. One should completely abandon the love of sleep and see the faults of loving sleep. One should completely abandon the love of work and see the faults of loving work. One should completely abandon the love of elaboration and see the faults of loving elaboration, combining them in that way. Regarding this loving-kindness, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating desire. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of destroying mindfulness. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating pride and flattery due to obtaining and not obtaining. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating ignorance. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of being stingy and attached to one's home due to accomplishing one's own benefit. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating deceit. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating shamelessness and lack of embarrassment due to completely abandoning the four noble lineages. One should examine that gain and respect are not permitted by all the Buddhas. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of generating pride, arrogance, and conceit. One should examine that gain and respect are the cause of despising the lamas. One should examine that gain and respect are the retinue of Mara and are the root of recklessness, gain and respect are the robbers of the roots of virtue, gain and respect are

Like vomiting, wheels, and falling tongues, gain and respect are like being covered with many ashes. Looking at the homes of friends and those who give alms, it generates displeasure and greatly confuses the mind. Gain and respect are the cause of sorrow because they transform painful things. They cause the four mindfulnesses to be spoken of and weaken the white dharma. Gain and respect completely ruin the four right abandonments. They completely ruin magical powers and clairvoyance. Those who were previously respected will later not be respected. Gain and respect cause one to dwell with the unfriendly and abandon the friendly. Gain and respect are like prostitutes who seduce others. Gain and respect completely abandon meditation and the immeasurable. They cause beings to fall into the realms of hell and animals, and into the world of Yama. Gain and respect should be regarded as consistent with the conduct of Devadatta and those who indulge in excesses. Maitreya, Bodhisattva, should examine what faults there are in gain and respect, like these. Having examined them, one should reduce desires and not be completely angered. Why is that? Maitreya, because there are no such faults in reducing desires. Therefore, there are no obstacles to the Buddha's teachings. Householders and renunciates will not become discouraged. Gods and humans dwell in order to purify their minds completely, and therefore it is worthy to protect them. There is no fear of all wrong views that fall into the lower realms. Because one is free from intimidation, one is not suppressed. Because one is completely liberated from the realm of Mara, one is not robbed. One is not overcome by all suffering. One is desired by gods and humans. Because one dwells in the habit of meditation, one is clear. Because one abandons deceit and falsehood, and regards the five objects of desire as faults, one is cautious. Because one dwells in the noble lineage, one acts accordingly. One is desired by the wise and those who practice pure conduct.
