It is said that it happened in this way. Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita, having heard the voice of the gods, felt joy, delight, and contentment, and generated happiness and pleasure. Together with the merchant's daughter and five hundred other women, he cleaned that place and arranged a Dharma throne adorned with all kinds of precious jewels. Then, those women took off their respective upper garments and spread them on the seat where Bodhisattva Mahasattva Dharmodbhava would sit and teach the Dharma. Afterwards, when Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita desired to sprinkle that land with liquid, the evil Mara made all the water disappear. Therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita, not finding water, became unhappy, felt pain in his heart, his mind changed, his roots of virtue diminished, and in order to make the offering unappealing, he made those waters disappear, and searched everywhere for water but could not find it. Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita thought: 'I will pierce my body and sprinkle this land with blood.' Why? Because this land is very dusty, and it arises from the realm of dust, and if it touches the body of Bodhisattva Mahasattva Dharmodbhava, it would not be good. What is the use of my body decaying without being eaten by demons? It is best for my body to decay for such a purpose. Desiring for things that are powerless, in the cycle of existence where desires reside, what is wrong with my body decaying hundreds and thousands of times in such places?' Then, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita took a sharp weapon and pierced his body everywhere, sprinkling that land all around with his own blood. The merchant's daughter and the five hundred women who followed Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita's example also took sharp weapons, pierced their own bodies, and sprinkled that land with their own blood. Because the evil Mara could not find an opportunity to create obstacles to their virtuous actions, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Sadāprarudita and those women did not change their minds.

Thus it is said. Therefore, in the Sutra of Four Dharmas, it is also said: Monks, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should not abandon their virtuous friends even for the sake of their lives. Thus it is said. Therefore, by not abandoning virtuous friends, one should protect oneself and so on. Also, by looking at the sutras, the foundations of the Bodhisattva's training mostly appear in the sutras. Because it is said in such and such sutras that the Bodhisattva's complete training and the foundations of the Bodhisattva's training are established. Therefore, if one does not look at them, one will not know the occurrence of downfalls, and therefore one will not abandon them. Therefore, one should always respectfully look at the sutras. Therefore, this speaks of not abandoning virtuous friends, and of upholding the true Dharma by looking at the sutras. In the Sutra Requested by Arya Sagaramati, it says: Son of good family, however, the unconditioned Dharma that cannot be expressed by the definitive words of letters, whatever definitive words of letters that express it, whatever taking, holding, teaching, making known, establishing, explaining, distinguishing, clarifying, and truly teaching, this is called upholding the true Dharma. Son of good family, furthermore, whatever Dharma speakers hold, teach, and make the essence of practice of such sutras, whatever Dharma speakers they attend, rely on, attend and serve, possess, attend to, respect, honor, cherish, always protect, conceal, uphold, give clothes, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, and utensils, give the word 'good', protect like a lord, protect all virtues, speak praises, and conceal unpleasant things, this is also upholding the true Dharma. Similarly, combining them, son of good family, furthermore, striving to eliminate disputes, and subduing disputes that are not Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, this is also upholding the true Dharma. Son of good family, furthermore, having a lineage without hatred, gathering all sentient beings.
