One should initiate steadfast diligence, so that one's own Buddha-field may be completely purified. In whatever way those sentient beings think, and whatever they desire in their minds, may it come to pass. Just as all the thoughts of the gods of the Thirty-Three are accomplished, and all their thoughts come to pass, so may it be. In whatever way those sentient beings may fully perfect thoughts endowed with Dharma, and may all sentient beings never be without the means of sustenance from all things at all times, one should generate such steadfast diligence. Thus, constantly working for the benefit of sentient beings is the cause of increasing merit. For details, one should consult the Sutra of Complete Purification of Conduct. Furthermore, the Dharma-giving that is without material possessions is the cause of increasing merit. As it is said in the Sutra of Encouraging Superior Intentions, if Maitreya gives Dharma-giving without seeking gain or respect, then the Dharma-giving without material possessions has twenty benefits. What are these twenty benefits? They are: being endowed with mindfulness, being endowed with intelligence, being endowed with wisdom, being endowed with faith, being endowed with prajna, being able to realize transcendent wisdom, having little attachment, having little hatred, having little delusion, the demons cannot find fault with him, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, remember him, non-humans protect him, the gods infuse his body with radiance, unfriendly people cannot find fault with him, he does not separate from friendly people, words worthy of praise, obtaining fearlessness, increasing inner happiness, being praised by the wise, he will remember that Dharma-giving, Maitreya, these are those twenty benefits. It is also said in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: If, Ananda, you teach the Dharma of the Hearer's Ground to the individuals of the Hearer's Vehicle, and through teaching this Dharma, all the sentient beings in the three thousand great thousand worlds

Even if all have attained the state of Arhat, you, a Shravaka, still cannot be considered to have done the work of a Shravaka for me. Ananda, if you teach or speak even one word related to the Prajnaparamita to a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, then the Shravaka will be considered to have pleased me. In the past, when the Dharma was taught, if all beings in the three thousand great thousand world realms attained the state of Arhat, then the merit from the giving of those Arhats, the merit from their discipline, and the merit from their meditation, Ananda, what do you think? Is the accumulation of merit great? He replied: Bhagavan, it is great. Sugata, it is great. The Bhagavan said: Ananda, therefore, if someone teaches the Dharma related to the Prajnaparamita to Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, then that person of the Shravaka vehicle will accumulate a very great accumulation of merit. Ananda, even more so, if someone teaches the Dharma related to the Prajnaparamita to Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, even for just one day, then they will accumulate a very great accumulation of merit. Ananda, let alone one day, even just the morning, Ananda, let alone the morning, even just from one hour to a moment. Connect it in this way. Ananda, this is the Dharma giving of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, which surpasses all the roots of virtue of all those of the Shravaka vehicle and the Pratyekabuddha vehicle. Ananda, it is impossible and there is no opportunity to think about a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possessing such roots of virtue, because it is impossible for a Bodhisattva Mahasattva to regress from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. How then should one practice Dharma giving? As it is said in the Sutra of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma: The wise should always contemplate the appropriate time.

Having entered the hut, close the door in that way, and properly observe all these Dharmas. Rise up and speak with a mind that does not shrink back. The wise one will always abide in bliss. Abiding in bliss, he will also teach the Dharma in that way. In a clean and pleasing place, a wide cushion should be well laid out, well decorated with beautiful colors. The clean Dharma robes should be well distributed, and the black dust cloth should also be prepared. The lower garment should be well distributed in a large size, and various beautiful silks should be well laid out. Sitting well on a throne with a footstool, having washed the feet well and ascended, the radiance of the face and countenance should be very smooth. Having sat well on that Dharma seat, to the assembled beings who are single-mindedly focused, speak many various kinds of words. To the monks and nuns, to the laymen and laywomen, to the kings and princes, that wise one, always without jealousy, also speaks various meaningful and pleasing words. Also completely abandon laziness, and do not generate the thought of weariness. The wise one should completely abandon all that is displeasing. The power of love should be cultivated in the retinue. Day and night, the supreme Dharma should also be well cultivated. That wise one, like a hundred thousand kotis, makes the retinue happy and also makes them rejoice in that way. For him, there is never even a little desire. Food and drink, and eating and cooking, clothes and bedding, and Dharma robes, and even medicine for illness, he does not think about. He does not ask for anything from the retinue. Furthermore, the wise one always thinks of himself and these sentient beings, "May they attain Buddhahood!" Whatever Dharma is taught for the benefit of the world, he thinks of it as all his own means of happiness. Thus it is said. Also, in that very text, it says, "When this category of Dharma is well taught, it brings about the joy of Dharma, and even to a very few, it does not particularly benefit more with the joy of Dharma." Also in the Moon Lamp Sutra it says: "For the sake of giving Dharma, if someone makes a request to you, do not say that it has been blessed by the greatly expanded ones. First, that word should be spoken. If you are learned and wise, before the great master, how should I explain?"
