And one should also do this: Whatever is done at all times for the benefit of sentient beings, this is it. This is from the Jewel Cloud Sutra: If one offers flowers, incense, or perfume to a Tathagata's stupa or a Tathagata's image, then one dedicates it to eliminate the foul odor of all sentient beings' bad habits and to spread the fragrance of the Tathagata's discipline. If one uses a duster and a cloth to clean, then one dedicates it to eliminate all unpleasant behaviors of all sentient beings and to perfect beautiful conduct. If one offers a flower umbrella, then one dedicates it to eliminate the suffering of all sentient beings' afflictions and near afflictions. If one enters a temple, one should generate the thought: 'I will place all sentient beings in the city of Nirvana.' If one exits, one should generate the thought: 'I will liberate all sentient beings from the prison of samsara.' If one opens the door of a dwelling, one should generate the thought: 'I will open the door to all the bliss of transcendent wisdom.' If one closes the door, one should generate the thought: 'I will close all the doors to the lower realms.' If one sits down, one should generate the thought: 'I will seat all sentient beings at the heart of enlightenment.' If one lies down on the right side, one should generate the thought: 'All sentient beings will fully enter Nirvana through the Nirvana of the Buddha.' If one rises from sleep, one should generate the thought: 'I will awaken all sentient beings from all arising afflictions.' If one walks for the sake of the body, one should generate the thought: 'May all sentient beings walk with the gait of a great being.' If one remains in that state, one should generate the thought: 'May the pain of all sentient beings' attachment, hatred, and ignorance be relieved.' If one washes, one should generate the thought: 'I will wash away the stains of all sentient beings' afflictions.' If one washes one's hands, one should generate the thought: 'I will eliminate the foul odor of all sentient beings' afflictions.' If one washes one's feet, one should generate the thought: 'I will eliminate the various kinds of dust of all sentient beings' afflictions.'

arises. When he washes his face, he generates the thought: 'May I completely purify the door of all dharmas of all sentient beings.' When he chews on a tooth stick, he generates the thought: 'May I eliminate the various kinds of defilements of all sentient beings.' He completely dedicates all movements of his body to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings. When he prostrates to the stupa of the Tathagata, he generates the thought: 'May all sentient beings and the world with gods prostrate to me.' As it is said. Or, as it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom, Shariputra, furthermore, if one goes to a fierce animal's dwelling, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not be afraid, should not be frightened, and should not be terrified. Why is that? Because in this way he completely takes everything for the benefit of all sentient beings. He thinks: 'If the wild animals eat me, may this giving be given. My Perfection of Giving will be completely fulfilled. And I will also be very close to the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. When I attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and become a Buddha, in that Buddha-field, may there be no sentient beings who have gone to the place of birth as animals.' In this way, he generates the thought. Shariputra, if one goes to a thief's dwelling, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not be afraid, should not be frightened, and should not be terrified. Why is that? Because those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas are skilled in completely giving away all possessions, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva also completely gives away the body. He also completely gives away the resources and necessities of life. He thinks: 'If those sentient beings steal my resources and necessities of life, may this giving be given to them. Even if they cut off my life, I will not generate hatred and anger towards them. I will not commit evil deeds against them with body, speech, and mind.' In this way, at that time, the Perfection of Giving and the Perfection of Discipline.

And, It will perfect the perfection of patience, and I will be very close to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Just as when I attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, in that Buddha-field, these faults and other faults will not arise in any way, and will not appear. I shall act in that way. One should generate such a thought. Shariputra, if you go to a deserted place with water, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not be afraid, should not be frightened, and should not panic. Why is that? Because Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are of a nature that is not afraid. He should think like this: I shall teach to cut off all the desires of all sentient beings. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not be afraid. If I die of thirst, I should generate great compassion for all sentient beings. Alas! Since such a deserted place with water appears in this world, these sentient beings are those with little merit. Just as when I attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, in that Buddha-field, a deserted place with water will not arise or appear in any way. I shall act in that way. I shall accomplish it in that way. Just as all sentient beings will be able to obtain water with eight qualities, I shall cause those sentient beings to practice virtuous deeds. Just as at that time it will perfect the perfection of diligence, in order to benefit all sentient beings, I shall undertake steadfast diligence. One should generate such a thought. Shariputra, again, if you go to a deserted place with hunger, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should not be afraid, should not be frightened, and should not panic. He should put on armor like this: Just as when I attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment and become a Buddha, in that Buddha-field, such a deserted place with hunger will not arise or appear in any way, and all those sentient beings will be happy, will have power over happiness, and will be endowed with happiness. I shall act in that way.
