Between. (Sanskrit: antarā) O Blessed One, thus, if a Bodhisattva has aspiration, then the Buddha's teachings blaze; if there is no aspiration, then they do not blaze. O Blessed One, it is like this: if clouds gather, then rain falls; if clouds do not gather, then rain does not fall. O Blessed One, thus, if there is no aspiration, then the Buddha's teachings arise; if there is aspiration, then they do not arise. O Blessed One, it is like this: for example, from a withered tree whose roots are damaged, flowers and fruits do not arise. O Blessed One, thus, from one whose aspiration is wrongly directed, all virtuous qualities do not arise. O Blessed One, therefore, a Bodhisattva seeking the enlightenment of a Buddha should act thus: 'I shall most excellently hold, most excellently guard, and most excellently tame my own mind.' What is called aspiration? As it is said in the Sutra of the Holy Inexhaustible Intelligence: 'Aspiration, because it is uncreated, is not artificial. Because it is without deceit, it is uncreated. Because it is fully realized, it is without deceit. Because it is without illusion, it is fully realized. Because it is pure, it is without illusion. Because it is upright, it is pure. Because it is without crookedness, it is upright. Because it is clear, it is without crookedness. Because it is without inequality, it is clear. Because it is firm, it is without equality. Because it is indestructible, it is firm. Because it is hard, it is indestructible. Because it is unmoving, it is hard. Because it is non-abiding, it is unmoving.' And so forth. This, having entered for the sake of obtaining superior qualities, is called superior aspiration. As it is said in that very text: 'For the sake of entering into distinctions, it is called the superior aspiration of the Victorious Ones.' And so forth. Furthermore, superior aspiration is defined as abiding in the bodies of all beings. Having loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Thinking of benefiting the noble ones. Having compassion for those who are not noble. Serving the gurus. Being a refuge for those without refuge. Being a protector for those without protection. Being an island for those without an island. Being a guardian for those without a guardian. Being a friend for those without a friend. Acting uprightly towards the deceitful. Acting clearly towards the stubborn. Acting without deceit towards the cunning. Acting without illusion towards the illusory. Acting with gratitude towards those who do not appreciate kindness. Acting with gratitude and repayment towards those who harbor resentment. Benefiting those who are unhelpful.

Binding. For those who have gone astray, it is truth. For those who are manly, there is no arrogance. For those who have done good deeds, there is no slander. For the mistakes of others, there is no argument. For those who have gone astray, there is universal protection. For all actions that employ skillful means, there is no seeing as a fault. For the places of giving, there is respectful service. For the teachings, there is harmonious adherence, and so on, as it is said. Having thus become steadfast in diligence and thought, placing compassion in front, strive diligently to increase virtue. As it is said in the Sutra of the Collection of the True Dharma, then, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, Bodhisattvas do not need to study too many dharmas. Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva can well hold and well understand one dharma, Blessed One, all the Buddha's dharmas are in his palm. What is the one dharma? It is great compassion. Blessed One, with great compassion, all the Buddha's dharmas are in the palms of the Bodhisattvas. Blessed One, for example, wherever the precious wheel of the Wheel-Turning King is, all the armies are there. Blessed One, similarly, wherever the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is, all the Buddha's dharmas are there. Blessed One, for example, when the sun rises, all the activities of sentient beings become very numerous. Blessed One, similarly, wherever great compassion arises, the other activities of the Dharma of Enlightenment also become very numerous. Blessed One, for example, all the faculties blessed by the mind become suitable for holding their respective objects. Blessed One, similarly, the dharmas of enlightenment blessed by great compassion become very suitable for performing their respective activities. Blessed One, for example, if there is a life force, other faculties will arise. Blessed One, similarly, if there is great compassion, enlightenment will
